I have tried 3 different DVD+R'S compusa,Arita made by Ricoh and TDK.none will play in my Apex AD-1201 DVD player.they all will play on my computer in the Optorite drive.my uncle tried the compusa DVD+R in his DVD player.it does the same thing 'NO DISK".another problem with DVD-RW'S they freeze up.I have only optodisk DVD+RW'S so I guess it could be the media.DVD-R play's great in my Apex.a friend of mine had a DVD+RW generic no name and it played on my Apex fine.he has a HP 300i.

    My Apex 1201 plays:

    Ritek G04 4x -R
    TDK 2x -R
    Ritek 2x -RW
    Princo 1x -R (don't ask, it's a gift)
    Memorex 2.4x +R

    and a few others I can't recall.

Sounds like yours is deffective, dirty, or a revision in the model? When did you buy it, what's the serial number manufacturing date (not whole number).

Original Firmware here. Flashing for multi-session DVD-R's sounds ominus. Are you sure? I mean I don't close my RW's an it reads them just fine.

I had this EXACT same problem with the Optorite when I owned it. I burned about 40 coasters trying to figure out "what I was doing wrong" before trading it in for my LG. First disc I burned with the LG worked in my Apex 1200. My advice to you, trade the Optorite in for a better brand burner. 8)
