    virtual dub won't work with wmv files so what can I use to extract sound from a wmv video file so I can use it on tmpgenc

    Have you tried Tmpgenc? No, I'm not kidding!

    Open the .wmv file as if you would be compressing it to MPEG, ignore any settings and go to the menu: File-->Output To File --> Wave file.

    A dialog appears in which you can select output path/file names as well as wav file format and codec settings. Best is to leave audio uncompressed and select only sampling rate and resolution.

    Works fast and like a charm.

    (PS. Just one of the many reasons why this little nice - and slow sometimes - program is a treasure)
