There was another thread where someone lost some disk space. If I find it, I'll point you to it.

In the meantime, go through the motions of fdisk, check to see what your actual sizes are in fdisk, do not make any removals or anything, just check.

Your system may have only seen 137 gigs.

A 160 gig is approx 152 gigabytes, 1024X1024X1024, 160 gig is 1000X1000X1000, so they can say 160 gigs.

Just as a DVD only holds 4.37 gigs, but 4.7 billion bytes.

    Cheers,

    George

  2. Here is my thread a couple months ago about the lost space and Norton was the culprit.

Have you tried looking in the temporary files? In Windows XP, go to folder options and set it to show hidden files and folders. Then click on the 'Documents and Settings' folder, click on the user name (not 'Default User' or 'All Users'). There should be a 'Local Settings' folder and in that folder is a 'Temp' folder. Most computers I've looked at will only have a couple hundred meg in that folder, but I've seen up to 10 GBytes in there. Over a long period of time some programs will create a lot of temporary files there which are no longer needed but the program never deletes them.

There are also a few other folders that can take up a lot of room and you can't see them unless you have 'show hidden files and folders' selected. System Restore can take up almost as much space as your OS.

Everything points to system/protected/hidden files. No reason for XP to "take the space" for no reason. Tools like PowerDesk Size Manager (Norton Utils has it too (kinda primitive)) or any tool capable of showing disc/folder/file usage will solve this "mystery" in a blink of an eye.
A propos, HD manuf. have Big Drive enabler utils (reg. patch.) if not sure whether XP is properly set up or SP1 is not installed.
Good idea: enable "view system / hidden files" in Folder Options.
