Then I guess she will have to quit watching TV around 2006 -2007 range. As there will be no more analog (standard def.) tv signlas. And I'm sure cable and satellite will have mostly HDTV channels by then too.

quote from fcc.gov " At the end of the transition period -- which is now scheduled for the year 2006 -- broadcasters will be required to surrender one of the two channels." (meaning the analog channel.).

My guess is we're all going to have to wait for authoring apps to be updated so they will explicitly and correctly support Dual Layer features (such as OTP/PTP, Layer break marker, etc) AND support the burners that will be able to provide this new capability. That means more $$$, cuz the cheapest apps probably won't incorporate it right away.

You can author 9.4 GB projects *today* - with DVD Studio Pro on a Mac.

Yes, but DVDSP2 doesn't yet support DL Burners, and would have to explicitly support the BURNING of dual layers, not just the creation/authoring. Currently, it supports the creation for use with DLT. Considering how long it took to upgrade to v2, it might end up being late in the game.

And DVD Studio Pro 2 is reduced to $500
    from $1000...early adopters note......

So all you do ..Author the new DUAL LAYER to HARD DRIVE instead of DLT..create an IMAGE and burn when that PESKY DUAL LAYER burning application is invented or TOAST 6.0000000001 incorporates it!

otherwise on windows we have dual layer DLT support in the proggies below (the old kind of DUAL LAYER probably won't work with the now product tho')
    DVD Producer $4999
    Reel DVD 3.0 $999
    Scenerist $15,000-30,000
    Spruce Maestro
(not made any more and really what DVD STUDIO PRO was adapted from)

  6. Another article that is similar to the other one posted in the register but interestingly, it mentions that:

The companies are still working on dual-layer DVD+RW rewritable discs, which are more difficult to develop, he said.

  10. yeah, cant wait for all the stupid people to buy the first batches of writers, and media,so the price drops for the rest of us.
and the speed will probably double as well, and the cost of media.
brilliant, and by the time that happens,Blu-ray,etc will be out,and thatll start the ball rolling again.

I wouldn't be so quick to talk down about the people who enable those prices to fall, the very same ones who help tech march on by buying it before everyone else does. Its rarely me, but frankly we NEED those people.

  12. And now a spokesperson from Philips has personally responded to cdfreaks.com and given some valuable info regarding dual layer burning on 8x writers. They specifically say it is too early to tell but they basically say that it is possible with the right updates. Completely AMAZING to say the least. I mean just months ago people felt the need to say it was IMPOSSIBLE to create dual layer writers to begin with..and now it looks like there's a damn good chance that 8x burners will potentially have the power with some tweaks to burn onto dual layer media!

    A...M...A...Z...I...N...G!!!!

If you read around on the site you'll see the Pioneer has been working on it for a while apparently. But there are no hints as to when, or any other info as of yet. It could be 2005... it could be next month, no one knows but Pioneer.
