Anyone know whether when an authoring program adds chapters whether this affects the VOBs or only the IFO file?

If it does, can you point me to any info?

    TIA

The VOB files have video, sound and audio tracks (at least for the movie). Any chapter points are pointed to by markers in the IFO file of the particular titleset.

For example, for chapter points in VTS_01_x.VOB look into VTS_01_0.IFO

The best starting point is to start browsing the IFO files with IFOEdit. The whole format of the IFO files can be found just by looking at the dumps the program shows.

The author of IFOEdit has the best available resources for the IFO format at the IFOEdit site (although you need to make a donation to be granted access).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Sasi,
I do not agree that IFO contains chapter points. Why: I have used IFOEdit to generate a DVD structure from VOBs files. The chapter points created by this process are exactly where the original video had. So I must say the VOBs files contain chapter point info.
I don't know much about the details but the observation above seem to explain it.
