Ok, I tried DVDx and smartripper +DVD2AVI. the first won't encode to Divx 5.1. The second, DVD2AVI would crash my computer (WinXP).
I burn some DVD a long time ago (Home videos) and now I want to copy them to Divx (latest version). What is the easiest way to do that? I haven't tried Dr. Divx, so I'm hesitant to buy it if it won't work well.
Also, how do you know what version of Divx was a video encoded?. Also what bitstream would you choose for VCD video? Sould it be 128kbps?
Thx

ok first I would highly suggest dropping the divx 5.1, as I have never had any good experiences with it. Secondly go get divx 4.12 as it works quite well and there are alot of nice tutorals here on encoding in that format. You can find the divx 4.12 in the tools I believe. Now as for Dr. Divx, I haven't used it so I can't vouch for weather it works or not I'm sure there are alot of comments on it somwhere around here. Onto the last part here to find out what version of divx was used to encode a file I would suggest using Gspot in the tools section, as its very good. There are other people much more qualified to make suggestions on what bitrate to encode VCDs at. hopefully they will help. Hope I was able to help, sorry if I didn't. take care and good luck.

Go to the doom9 website and look up DivX in the guides section.
They have a wonder guide on how to use GORDIAN KNOT to encode to DivX.
The guide even has download links for all the software you need to use. Basically GORDIAN KNOT is a program that makes use of other programs to stream line the DivX creation process.
GORDIAN KNOT is designed to work with the programs it uses and everything comes bundled together in like 2 or 3 downloads.
It's not as simple as Dr. DivX but if you follow the guide it ain't ALL that difficult and you will end up with excellent DivX files.

Use DVDDecrypter (rip VOB's to hard drive first - save your DVD drive and get faster performance!) -->DVDx 2.2 w/ divx 4.12 codec. It should also work with 5.1, but it's way too slow. You could also use DivX 5.03 (what i currently use) and preferably do a 2 pass encode. For encoding apps, you can also TMPGenc (File-->Output to File...-->AVI .... this option is nice b/c you can use all of TMPGenc's functions before rendering as a file... only use if you want to encode part of the video or specifically use TMPGenc filters), VirtualDub (write an avs script or use DVD2AVI and vfapi converter to create a frameserving avi file, open in Vdub and load the wav file saved by dvd2avi), FlaskMPEG (kind of buggy), XMPEG (get the latest version for the love of God! Don't use 2 pass, but many WinXp users will swear by this program to be best DivX encoder. I beg to differ!). Remeber. Before using any encoding apps, rib the VOBs using DVDDecryptr. Encodeing will be faster, you can later encode to VCD, etc., and you save your DVD drive (if you only have a DVD burner, this saves you a cuople hundred dollars!). Guides for these apps are all over the place, but most of these programs are rather intuitive. Just make sure that if you're doing MP3 audio, use the MPEG Layer 3 codec, NOT LAME! (for lower bitrates that is). Hope that helps.

I opened another thread for my problem with DVD2AVI. I hope somebody had the same problem and I can make it work on my computer.
So my other option is virtualdub, how do you do that?:
VirtualDub (write an avs script...)

That is probably why you had the problems you had. No reason you can't get it to work.

How do you get that version? I only can get version 1.77.3 (latest one) and that's the one causing the problem. I don;t know if gordian knot uses the same versio, but both version won't work on my system.

I tried that and I keep having the same problem. I get the error:
AppName: dvd2av~1.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: dvd2av~1.exe
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000a344

Maybe you haven't properly uninstalled the other versions of DVD2AVI

I didn't have any version installed before. Also Gordian Knot installs version 1.0.0 GD, so I don't think it's 1.76.

i would agree dvd2avi works well, I have never had any problem with it. I am using version 1.77.3 on win/xp pro. Also divx 5.01 I have never had any problem with, and it is better and faster than previous versions. As to sound, I again often use LAME when encodimg mps as this is one of the better encoders, certainly to my ears.
dr divx does work and is very simple to use.Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.
