  1. greetings,
I'm considering the Sharp or Sony recorder to convert approx. 100 VHS-C home movies to DVD-R format. I just want to archive and not get into any fancy editing, etc. I plan to pick the highest quality recording mode (for what it's worth) and do 1 movie per disk. And this winter, I may retire my analog camcorder and purchase a miniDV cam, so a Firewire input would be a requirement in whatever standalone recorder I get. I can get the Sharp for $150-$200 less than the Sony. For what I want to do, should I save my $ and go for the Sharp? Or would the Sony provide noticeably better recording quality since it's VBR? (I thought I came across an article stating the Sharp has VBR too.) I did read that the Sony has One Touch Dubbing for recording from miniDV cams, which sounds like the only other thing it has over the Sharp.

Thanks in advance for your inputs!

  4. I can not speak at all about the Sony but I have the sharp and i am really happy with it. For what you want to do with it I would say save the money and go with the Sharp. Even if you decide to somewhere down the road go into some PC editing the Sharp is still very very capable.

  5. thanks Mixer2000. I'm glad to see another vote for the Sharp. So, have you used it, in particular, to archive your VHS analog tapes to it?

Regarding PC editing, maybe I'll try it one day. I've already dabbled in that world with Pinnacle and Dazzle, with mixed results (i.e., looks acceptable on my PC monitor but not on my DVD player). But at least it's good to know I can get back into it with today's products.
