When using DVD Decrypter to rip my dvd's...usually takes about 15-20 mins to do so while ripping at about a steady 2x on my Pioneer A05...but ripping Dawn of the Dead today it ripped at a blazing fast 10x and finished ripping in 6 minutes!! I left the room, came back and it was done, i thought it was a mistake so I re-ripped and sure enough it ripped at 10x again and finished in 6 minutes.
Why all of a sudden did this dvd rip so fast while all others at are about 2-3x ripping speed?

Do a forum search. Most DVD-ROM drives are locked at 2x rip speed for all CSS encoded discs. I suspect that the disc in question was not encrypted. IF you want to rip at higher speeds I would suggest that you buy a unlocked DVD-ROM drive. The most popular choice is the Lite-on 166s.
You can get it from www.newegg.com for $30. -
I regularly get 8-10x rips with my Memorex DVD (don't have the model right now) and DVD Decrypter, regardless of CSS or not.

Again most DVD-ROM drives are lock at 2x but not all are (only need 1x to play a DVD video after all). There are a lot of unlocked drives other there, but the only one I know by make/model is the Lite-on 166S
That's why I suggesteda forum search, other posters have listed what works for them. Luck... -

I bought DOTD at Target a while ago...its the Anchor Bay dvd.
I may look into getting a new ripper dvd-rom drive...my 4 year old Toshiba MD1202 keeps giving me read errors now once at 90% of the disk....never used to do that before now it does it all the time.
Thanks for the tip on the unlocked dvd-rom drives...ill research it and get one -
It's probably a single-layer disk. Drives work a lot slower ripping dual-layer disks than single-layer ones.
-Yar, matey!- -
Yeah...its a single layer disk...but even then I never noticed it going at 10X speed. I ordered the Lite-On 166S drive anyway.

I had a Lite-on 163. ditched it for a samsung drive. the lite-on was nothing but problems. wouldn't rip half the DVDs I have. others say lite-on is excellent. I'm guessing something with Dells setup was the real problem for me.
-
I've owned several lite-on drives (CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CDR IDE, CDR SCSI) over the years and never had a problem with any of them. The 166s is the recommend drive for ripping on this forum (based on my own personal non-random observations).
Also make sure that you have a valid ASPI layer installed, DMA enabled for your IDE controller, and I suggest ripping with DVD Decrypter (its faster that smartripper et.al. and can be set rip ISO image files which I personally prefer to work with).
DVD5 discs do rip much faster than DVD9 discs. I ripped one un-encrypted DVD5 disc series at 15.5x! Took less than 3min for everything. Actually now that I reflect on it... it's kind of sad that that excited/made me so happy -
