Hey guys, im pretty new at burning DVD's, I know how to take video clips, and burn them onto DVD and they work fine, however, I only have 1 Issue with Widescreen Videos.
(I searched the forum, but havent found anything to help me because I dont really understand how these work)
Anyways here is my issue...
I have multiple DIVX movies on my PC. They are ALL in widescreen format. (Widescreens the only way to go!) So lets take one of my movies for example...
Men In Black 2 @ 640x352
Thats the movie and its dementions... Now when i use a program such as Ulead DVD Movie Factory to setup my DVD it fits the movie to the whole screen rather than widescreen. (In preview mode, and in my DVD player)
I checked options and settings and nowhere could i set it to use its original aspect ratio.
If i burn the DVD the movie is burned correctly except it smushes the widescreen into the TV causing narrow people and a bit of distortion. How would i go about keeping the video in widescreen?
I want to provide you guys with the most information i can so that way im not missing anything so im not sure what you need... I attached a image of the movie properties using DVD movie factory...
Any help is appreciated and this site is awesome and I plan on being a frequent member of the forums to help out others. (That is of course once i learn the loops too!)

The easiest way to work with videos like the kind you are describing is to use TMPGEnc but then chances are ULEAD DVD MF2 won't like the files and you will have to use ANOTHER program for your DVD authoring needs.
I don't know how to work around this using just ULEAD DVD MF2

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to make MF2 do otherwise.
It ain't the greatest program in the world.
There are much better programs out there to use and they will allow you to retain the aspect ratio.
I used MF2 once for a while but soon grew tired of it. It's a nice learning tool I suppose but not good for much else.

I have downloaded the trial version of TMPGEnc Pluz 2.5.
When it first loads it brings the options on the left... (Using the wizard)
In the DVD category theres a few options...
NTSC
NTSC Low Resolution
NTSC 16:9
Which would i choose? its defaulted on the 16:9...
And above the "Next Button" says...
CBM linear PCM Audio. (is this the one i choose?)
THis would be the first time actually using TMPGEnc...
I would love to learn it, just not sure which settings are best fit for the needs that i have.
----
Aside from this, there HAS to be some sort of program that can burn videos keeping the aspect ratio such as widescreen. Has anyone come across a easier "choose a file -> burn" technique, keeping the correct ratios?
---- -
Which program could i use to keep the aspect ratios? I dont mind buying it since afterall i did buy a dvd burner to burn movies
Jason -
16:9 = widescreen
4:3 = fullscreen/pan&scan
For a DVD to be widescreen it must be 720x480 or 704x480 for NTSC or 720x576/704x576 for PAL.

Oh does TMPGENC also burn dvd's? I thought it only saved the video and audio to sperate files or something...
After i get through the first wizard menu in tmp it goes to this window that
asks for the video source and audio source.
It adds the video but wont add the audio from the movie file, it says its unsupported or cannot open.
(I can try a different movie if need be)
EXPERT SETTINGS BOX
For the source, i would choose 16:9 Display correct?
Content of video: Film Movie
After this it goes to the
FILTER SETTINGS
Source frame
Clip Frame
Noise Reduction
or other settings . . . (button)
This is the step im at in my learning process, Ill wait to proceed once more help is gathered -
You could probably leave the settings as-is, but you need to fix your audio. You might want to download GSPOT and see what it says about your audio.
When you get to step 4 in the TMPGEnc Wizard and it asks about your bitrate, just make it so your target file size around 4gb.
TMPGEnc wont burn DVDs, but it will make the movie in a valid DVD format which a DVD authoring program can burn. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author.Ejoc's CVD Page:
DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy
DVD:
DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX
Capture:
VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author -
Okay im going to export the video first...
In step 4 where i choose the bitrate, it says i can set it to use 100% of the disk capacity, if i choose that option, it then says it may not fit on disk.. So i lowered the bitrate to continue...
Since TMPGENC cant do my audio, i can do the video only, and the audio with a different program right?
Im going to export the video now
And this will make it compatible to be in widescreen? -
Okay it is exporting, but it says its exporting the sound too? Even after it couldnt load the sound?
Also, while its exporting the video, i also notice its not doing it in widescreen, its in fullscreen. Is it supposed to look like this in this process?
In the "Stream type" area it has..
ES (Audio+Video)
Selected... I wasnt given the option to change this was I?
Below that is displays some info, not sure if its needed...
DVD NTSC (MPEG-2 720x480 23.976fps CBR 4850kbps, Linear PCM 48000Hz 1536kbps) -
OK hold on ...
We need to back up a bit here.
Start up VirtualDub and load your original AVI file. If you get an POPUP error about the audio just hit OK on the POPUP.
Now go to AUDIO (one of the options across the top) and underneath that select FULL PROCESSING MODE
Now go back to AUDIO and this time select CONVERSION
Now a window pops up called AUDIO CONVERSION and you want the sampling rate to be 48000Hz which it might already be if not then change it to that. If you have to change it then make sure to select HIGH QUALITY but I don't think you need to select INTEGRAL CONVERSION although frankly I don't know what that does.
For PRECISION you want 16-BIT and for CHANNELS you want STEREO
Once you set that up go ahead and click on OK
Now go back to AUDIO once last time and select COMPRESSION
The default should be <No Compression (PCM)> which is want you want. If it isn't set to PCM make it so then click OK.
Now go to FILE (again across the top) and select SAVE WAV...
This will save a 16-bit 48k Stereo WAV file of your movie's soundtrack.
Once that is done go back to AUDIO and select NO AUDIO
Now go to VIDEO and select DIRECT STREAM COPY
Now go to FILE and select SAVE AS AVI...
Now you are saving a new EXACT copy of your movie but this time without sound.
So ... when you use TMPGEnc you enter the new soundless AVI as your VIDEO SOURCE and you enter the WAV file that you extracted as your AUDIO
As far as the TMPGEnc WIZARD goes I'm going to post on that in just a few minutes here ...
Go get your source prepared.

Just a quick note ... can you let me know exactly how long the movie is ... this determines the bitrate you will use in TMPGEnc.
I want the running time in minutes ... round up even if it is only a second over (so 1 hour 52 minutes and 1 second would be reported as 113 minutes).
This way I can tell you how to set the bitrate.

Okay, while i was eating dinner i extracted the audio and video before the last post... So ill have to do it again fallowing your steps... Im going to do the movie "Bowling for columbine" and we will work with this video...
(after this post i will start the audio extraction like you noted)
Im going to delete all the steps i tried (previous video and audio), ill fallow your instructions, soon as i get the audio extracted and that completed... Well goto the next step!
Thanks alot for the help, its GREATLY appreciated and I hope im not an annoyance to the boards
Jason -
I setup all the settings for AUDIO when saving as .wav, error occurs...
"The audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format."
Any ideas?
And here is the video information...
Bowling For Columbine
Size: 717,236KB
Length: 1:57:45
dimentions: 576x304

Last but not least here is a much more in-depth guide than the first one on using TMPGEnc for AVI to DVD.
Hope this helps

*** EDIT ***
The last link in my list is actually for doing the conversion with CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER (aka CCE) but it still has a lot of usefull information even though you will be using TMPGEnc instead of CCE."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

I dont know why images wont post on the forums so i setup the screen shot on my servers.
This is the file information screen... I will read the pages tonight

I have like 7 movies, do you think i have an audio issue with each one?
This is the properties for bowling for columbine. -
Try playing it in a media file player like BSPlayer and see what it is doing to decode the audio. That way you will know for sure if it is AC-3 or MP-3 or whatever.
But it says 44.1Khz so how can that be AC-3 moviegeek?
- John "FulciLives" Coleman
P.S.
Try extracting it to a WAV without changing it to 48Khz and see if you still get the same error message."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Okay i ran AVICodec and I made a screen shot.
http://www.afreegaming.com/divxinfo2.gif
I tried doing it without changing to 48Khz and same error. (I tried No Change, 44,100Hz)
---
Not sure how to check the codec information in Media Player. In the bottom left it doesnt search for a codec, it just starts playing the video. -

Try extracting the audio with that. If you can try to change it to 48k 16-bit Stereo if that doesn't work try it without changing anything.

So many programs to download :P
Okay i got the Virtual Dub MP3 Freeze, when i do the same settings and try to save the WAV it says...
"ACM failed to suggest audio decompression format"
fallowed by this error
"AVIOutputWAV: The Handle Is Invalid"
I noticed I only get these errors if i have the selection under the
AUDIO -> Full Processing Mode
So i know its not the Conversion or compression settings...
Is it good to do without full processing mode?
