  1. Has anyone analyzed the file structure of a DVD-R recorded with the Panasonic E-100HS ?
Does the DVD omit the AUDIO_TS Folder? (like all the previous Panasonic DVD recorders)

  4. Unfortunately, some of the older DVD players (~1998-1999) look for the Audio_TS folder or they won't play. Granted this will be less of a problem as more people get/upgrade to newer players, but there may be compatibility problems for anyone with an older player. My Toshiba 6109C will not play a backup from DVD Decrypter (no Audio_TS folder folder), but the same backup ripped by DVD Decrypter in file mode and then burned with Instant Copy 7 (has Audio_TS folder) plays fine.

  6. I do realize that the Audio folder is not needed for DVD video. However, as has been noted on many earlier posts to VCDHelp (now DVDRhelp), there are some early DVD players that look for it since apparently in the early days of DVD standards audio files were potentially considered to be stored there. That obviously never made it into the standard as it is today (so newer players do not look for it to play DVD video), but the early players assumed it would be required. Perhaps something else creates the incompatibility, but backups from IC7 prior to the inclusion of the Audio folder in the burning (a later update from Pinnacle due to the problem mentioned above) did not work in my Toshiba. So the burning method difference is not likely.

You are correct that it is now only used for DVD Audio. I have seen posts from people looking for ways to back up their DVD audio collection, but can't since this folder is widely ignored now for DVD video backup software.

  7. houtx67, you can test it be removing AUDIO_TS from final product of IC7

What I believe is that all depends on way how DVD is Authored. By using IC7 you do re-author DVD.

  9. Donpedro and PhilipL,

    Thanks for your responses.

If my pre-update version of IC7 (that didn't burn an empty Audio_TS file) produced DVD-Rs that weren't compatible, I'm assuming removing it would do the same. In fact, Pinnacle added this update to address this problem. This is the same case for single layer backups where no transoding is required as well.

    PhilipL:

I was under the impression that the Audio_TS folder has always been in place on a DVD's structure. This dates back to when MP2 was considered being used as the audio files for DVD vs just PCM, AC3, etc., which would be stored in the Audio_TS file. I will have to check some of my oldest DVDs to verify. I will also have to check my newest DVDs to verify that they don't come with an empty Audio_TS folder anymore. The last time I did look (not recently), there was one.

Again, I don't think that an empty Audio_TS folder "magically" makes a DVD play. On older players, it does appear that they check for it, even though they don't utilize it (not utilizing it is still in line with the DVD standard today). I'm not disputing that potentially the software used may have an impact. In fact I have only ruled out options to get this answer (as many others have). However, a blanket statement that there is a proper way to re-author to where this problem goes away hasn't been supported yet. Going back to my original post, I only pointed out that for more universal compatibility with other players, an Audio_TS folder is advisable. This does not mean everyone should do it. It depends on how many different players your finished product is expected to be played on. While some people may maintain that it doesn't make a difference, I haven't seen anyone post that it made their compatibility worse, while I have seen (and experienced) that it did make my compatibility better.

As with any any comment on this forum, your and my comments should be taken with a grain of salt until proven by the end user, or whatever works for them. You seem dead set that I am wrong, but you haven't 100% proved to me that the reauthoring is the answer vs the Audio_TS folder check. If you (or any other forum member) have a couple of suggestions for DVDs from 1998-1999 (and newer ones) that do not have the Audio_TS folder, I will be happy to try and test them to rule this option out. These would also prove that the Audio_TS folder didn't exist when DVDs first came out as well as that they do not contain them now. Again, I am not disputing that there may be another reason for this incompatibility, but I would like to rule out this option before we truly call it an urban myth and discard any notion that it may assist in more universal compatibility.

I am only trying to keep knowledge/experiences open and available to readers on this forum. It seems pre-emptive to rule out something that hasn't been truly ruled out yet. I myself would like a better option than having to take the extra time to use IC7 if possible.
