OK, I have a DVD that I want to backup but it's causing me some problems.
The original DVD is just over 7gig, it's a 3hr 45min movie and it has PCM audio which on it's own is 2.15gig! So my usual method is to rip with DVD Decryptor then use DVD shrink or DVD2One to get the right size, but because neither of these programs compress the audio even if I do just the film it comes out looking horrible!

So what would be ideal would be to demux the audio, compress to a more reasonable size, remux then run through DVD2One or something! Only problem is I have no real idea how this is done!

I have so far managed to demux the video & audio (to wav & mv2) with DVD Decryptor but this gives me the movie in 7 seperate parts and need to get them back together and correctly structured so I can open it up as a complete DVD again! Is there a dvd author program that will allow me to open my 7 mv2 & mpa (I converted the wav to mpa using tmpg...don't know if this was correct just guessing really and seeing how it goes) and remux back to vobs with all the correct ifo's!

Any help will be gratefully received! Thanks in advance!

You are talking about re-authoring the DVD. Basically any Guide or authoring program will be able to do what you want now.

Look in TOOLS for DVD Author and the Authoring section in Green area on the left.

You'll be moving into a whole new arena than "ripping". Time to read up on all that now.

    Good luck.

    OK m8, thanks!

Would you recommend any one author program in particular for my first attempt or are they all equally complicated as each other?

I've had the same issue with my Wagner opera DVDs.
Yes, you have to demux the video and audio - Then use BeSweet and change the LPCM audio to AC3 and then remux the video and audio.

    I used IfoEdit for that.

They are all very different from each other. Different prices, ease of use, features, flexibility, etc.

Tmpgenc DVD Author has a free trial, is inexpensive afterwards and seems popular. Might be good for a first try to make a working disc. You can always move on to something else later, if you need to.

Really, it is a good idea to read through Authoring anyway, so you recognise steps as you approach them (if you haven't already).

It will help if you run into trouble further on.

That might be the easier route at this stage, as opposed to IFOedit. :c) But it's up to you which you'd prefer to learn next.

I'd re-author - if you've never authored a disc, then learn IFOedit in future.

    Good luck. :c)

Exactly what he said, I think Baldrick has a good guide on how to use besweet for the task. Check the guides section.

Thanks m8, I will take your advice and read up more on dvd authoring. I was kind of hoping there would be an easy option but..lol....I'd guessed already that there isn't going to be!

Will give Tmpg a go and see how I go....at least I have some DVD-RW so won't be coastering a load of discs!

Thanks for the good luck...I've a feeling I'm going to need it..lol

DVD re-authoring will only work if you split the original dvd into 2 dvd's - You cannot compress audio, only video !!! The correct audio format for DVD is LPCM or AC3 - Remember to select the 'Boost - Compress Dynamic Range' and set the 'boost factor' between 5-10 and the 'Limit Factor' to 1.00

Rem: AC3 audio is very different from LPCM - Without the Boost you will find the audio much weaker than the wav-file. Good info on AC3 is:
