  1. Hi,

Just to state the facts, my MSI DRA4 is the same as the Optorite drive 203 (I think), it came equipped with v2.17 firmware.

So far, after two weeks I have yet to find any brand of dvd-r can can be read on any other PC dvd-rom drive, whether its data or video!
I've got Ritek +R (sweet discs!) and Ritek -R's at the moment, even these quality -R's cant be read on any of my mates pc's! Why?

Has anyone ever successfully burnt a dvd-r that can be read in a pc dvd-rom? If so, can you name the brand of media and dvd-rom you've tested.

    Thanks.

    B1.

  2. Please refer to the following link for the well known problem of the Optorite/MSI/Sanyo burners:

    http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12448

So far the Lite-On XJ-HD165H/166S DVD-ROM drives seem to be the only PC drives which can read the DVD-R discs burned by the DD0203/DD0201.

BTW, Optorite is well aware of this problem but hasn't been able to come up with anything to fix this problem for over two months.

  3. i got a optowrite DD0203 also. i haven't had any problems. the first thing i did when i got the drive is flashed the firmware of the bios to v2.216. the reason i did this is because 2 of my friends bought the same drive and it was working very flakey. they they changed the firmware to v2.216 from v2.17 and both of the drives work great. i didn't even try to do anything with mine until after i flashed the firmware. i have burnt some in mine now and haven't had any issues with dvd drives or dvd players.

here is the link for the version of the firmware from optorite.

yes, i am able to burn dvd-r's that are readable in other pc drives. i have tried them in at least 4 or 5 pc dvd drives and haven't had any problems. also 3 of my friends that have the same drive after updateing the firmware they haven't had any issues with the drive.

  6. @xanatos 21:
On which PC-DVD Drives you have tested that ?
    @all:
There is a new Firmware available for the Optorite DD0201 itīs version
2.23. But no FW for the DD0203.
Has anyone tested this with the DD0203 ? Is the problem fixed with this ? Please let me know what you think about this firmware.

    Thx

Well pfft! Wish I knew what was different in my setup or drive that yours works and mine doesn't. I did the same thing when I got mine, checked to see if the firmware was up todate and it already had the latest firmware when I bought it. Mind you that hasn't stopped me from trying to update it anyway just to see if maybe it was a bad update.

I did get an email reply from Optorite today though about this. Sent them an email a few weeks ago that wasn't all that plesant. *grin* Asked why there was no useful information on there web site or a forum or information about what's in there firmware updates. Not to mention I also asked about what's up with this problem that's been around for a couple (or more) months with no other drive being able to read the DVDs made from this drive. Here is the reply I got from them:

    Hello,

    1) Yes, we are aware of the fact that the firmware updates do not indicate what was changed or improved. We do not get this information from the engineers. The next firmware that is released, however, we will post changes or improvements made.

    2) The multisession/finalization problem was found out recently. We tell customer that email us to try that solution. We are also in a process of overhauling the website.

    Thank you,

there was a post on this forum a while back that firmware ver. 2.17 was mistakenly posted ( on optorite web sight ) as an upgrade for the DD0203. Ver.2.17 was actually supposed to be for ( if I remember correctly )DD0201. Ver.2.16 was the correct ver. for the D0203. From the posts, some ppl even ruined their drive upgrading to ver. 2.17. Optorite quickly fixed their website and pulled ver.2.17 from the DD0203 upgrade. I use ver. 2.16 which works for me (so far). Just a thought.

Yeah I read about that too. I mentioned that in my email to them aswell, and as you can see from my post above they ignored that question and many others I asked, hehe. I glare at that disclaimer every time I visit there site, the one that says we aren't resposible for anything that goes wrong even if we tell you do it kinda thing. Never can figure out if that's funny or just down right evil of them. hehe when they put out a new one, I'm sure not updating my drive untill I see someone say something about it first though! Doesn't strike me as the most trust worthy company at this time. :-p

I'm guessing they are going to start putting what's in the updates cuz they are sick of people emailing them. If they would just put info on there site, like about this problem and the work around, I'd be a total happy camper with this drive. It's a good drive I think, specialy for the money, but I'm still a little bitter about wasting so much money and time to find a fix for the drive that came to me basicly in an unworkable state, with out knowing the work around.

Untill they do actually fix this, I'm still telling my friends who in the market of buying a DVD burner to just stay away from this one. It's a paint to have to do that work around every time you make a DVD.

    Well.... hmmmm......

I think I'll wait to see someone test that firmware with an actual Optirite 203, hehe I'm a little uneasy with this drive still. Just not feeling to lucky with this drive atm. :-p

Acording to the email they sent me they are going to post one for the 203 in a day or two anyway. Not that I'm holding my breath.

Keep me posted with info I'd LOVE to not have to use the silly work around any more.

  13. AT LAST!!!!!!!!!

Just flashed my MSI DR4A with the 2.23 firmware from Optorite, its still detected in Device Manager as a ATAPI DUAL DVD 4xMAX. So I presume its the 0201 drive.
I had to flash using the DOS proggy, but it worked a treat.

The good news is they have CURED, yes CURED the -R singlesession problem. I've written 5 discs in Nero 60019 with the default session DAO settings. ALL of the discs worked in my LG Dvd-Rom 8160B, including some crappy Mirror Platinums, but the 4x Ritek G04's i've got are the bees knees.

So, to steal a quote someone used earlier, i'm a happy camper!

  16. I think I can confirm.

Flashed my Optorite DD0203 to firmware v2.23 last night (Supposedly DD0201 firmware only)

Flash utility crashed, as it did when I updated to v2.16, but drive is recognised by Nero Infotools as v2.23 so it looked successful.

Only had time for one test. Burnt a Ritek G04 DVD-R at 2x using CloneDVD and.........

It plays in my LG GDR8161b DVD ROM drive !!! Something it has never achieved with any DVD-R to date.

I'll try some PRINCO x4 as a real test tonight, but I thought others might like to know ASAP.
