A friend of mine was telling me about this. I am going to assume it is a dual sided disk. Am I correct, or are there going to be higher capacity one-sided disks?
You will have to read a little down the page for the part addressing the capacity.

Looks to me like they are talking about a 2 sided disk.....which of course, Ritek already sells. I think the focus of THAT article is about how the machines will compress the programs/movies down so that more hours-worth of viewing can be done on one disk, rather than the ability to put 9.4gigs of data on one disk.

Dual layer dvd writers affordable enuff for the average consumer is still, in MY opinion, a year or three away. Before then tho...the blue laser will be out, allowing even higher capacity. The cost will be high, but it'd be kewl to use one disk to backup 3 to 5 movies.

  5. From what it says, they are referring to a 9.4 gb dvd-ram disk.

@ Kingnog...If you backup cartoon episodes, you prolly can get more than 5. However, if u backup five 8 or 9gig movie DVD's......that's 40 - 45gig. My estimation was spot on based upon what we know so far.

You sed it yerself...UP TO 50gig. They aren't even out yet, so nobody even knows what the consumers will actually be able to do with em. The current recordable media sez 4.7gig, but we all know that what u can actually burn is several hunnerd mb less. Sheesh.

  7. 8-9 gig movies? Thats a lot.... I mean, shrinking a 9gig dvd to 4.3 gig is NOT going to affect the quality that much, unless you have a 50 inch HDTV or something!
