I have a movie on disk (svcd) and it is the only copy that I have. The thing is, it won't play all the way through. It skips, freezes, squeals and basically pisses me off. I am hoping that this problem can be solved by re-encoding or something, because this is a hard file to find. I checked out the relative guide "How to fix a broken svcd" and I didn't really have any luck. Although the file properties list 777mb., TMPGenc will only de-mux for a quick second, as if it doesn't acknowledge all of the data on the disk.

I extracted the mpg with isobuster, and then I ran it through vdub to scan for frames, but as always it said 0 bad frames. As I was looking at it through vdub, I saw the parts that were causing the problem. Its like lines from the previous frame are overlapping into the next frame. I hope that my post is not too hard to understand, but I had to start somewhere. this cd is not scratched up beyond repair, its the file that is messed up somehow. If anyone can give me any pointers, or even wild guesses as to how I can begin to figure out what to do to save this file...I would really appreciate it! In the meantime, I will keep studying the forums, because I know this shit cant be impossible.

    Thanks,

Since you can extract the mpg with isobuster, have you tried loading the extracted file into a video editor and re-encoding- or maybe edit out the bad frames and then re-encode?

could be that the mpeg is still good and the overlap you see is blended interlace that can produce that effect, when tmpg quits to early like that its usually a streaming error, try frameserving with virtualdub and reencode

"First of all, let me say thanks to you both for your replies.

    [/b]To Bob K.:
Yes, I was able to extract the file with isobuster, and I also thought that I just need to edit out the problem parts of the file, but this is the first time that I have ever tried this before and I don't know where to start. If you can give me any suggestions I would appreciate it. If you are talking about virtualdub, keep reading, because that is my next question.

    To johns0:
Okay, your response is kind of what I thought might be the problem, but I still need some more info. For instance when you said
the overlap you see is blended interlace that can produce that effect, when tmpg quits to early like that its usually a streaming error"...where you implying that a Tmpgenc streaming error may be related to my problem with the overlap/blended interlace deal? I thought that streaming errors only occured when disk space was too low. Anyway, even though my hard drive is ridiculously packed, I have at least 3-4 gigs at this time, which I know is enough for this shit. so anyway, I guess what I am trying to find out is how do I frameserve with vdub? And how exactly do I get the overlapping video to "un-overlap"And what exactly is frameserving anyway?

I have never taken the time to learn how to do this (repair a screwed up disk/file), even though I have had plenty of situations that called for it. I actually enjoy challenging things such as this is to me, and I would appreciate your guidance, or anyone elses that knows the deal.

    Thanks,

    budgirl357

P.S. any guides or links to other sites would be cool too!

the blended overlap doesnt cause stream errors, load the file into virtualdubmod and choose frameserve from file, first install AuxSetup.exe in the virtualdub mod folder and choose install handler, when you choose frameserve name the file with the .avi extension and load it into tmpg and reencode
