Adobe After Effects is a good one, very deep and a ton of plugins.

Vegas has a good selection of effects built in, and there are a few plugins floating around for it. I like this one quite a bit, I find the learning curve is much easier, and it covers editing, in-depth audio work, compositing and titling all in one application.

of course, there are a ton of filters for Virtualdub.

Particle Illusion is a nice one as well for doing particle effects - explosions, fire, waterfalls, etc. if you can find the right back issue of Digit magazine from August, the SE version was included free on the cover disc - not bad, a $99 version for around $13.

depends on what kind of effects you are looking for....

  5. Adobe After Effects is a superb program but very expensive -- around $600. You might want to give AviSynth a whirl. It has a much higher learning curve but lets you do many of the same things.

I like AviSynth as well. It also does a few things Video Studio cannot do. Like open certain DivX video, display four videos as one, etc. And Vs 7 stillonly costs around $100.00. One of these days I hope to meet someone who can afford Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
