  1. Hi guys need some advice from the experts or experienced gurus.
    Finally I got my DVD burner (Pioneer DVR-106D 4x + and -)
I am trying to simply copy the movie.
I can copy it burn it – it plays fine on the burner but when I put it in to stand alone DVD player – some move starts and I can go to menu select chapters and then the disk will lock, some disk plays for 10 – 15 minutes and then disc error occur. I tried several dvd players – same think
I used Nero 6 to burn DVD-R or CloneDVD to burn DVD-R.
I have no name media 4x DVD-R but burned it on 2x speed.
Software used ether CloneDVD with AnyDvd or DVDDecrypter and then I used CloneDVD without AnyDVD.
I also riped dvd5 in movie mode created ifo files and burned with Nero 6.

    Any ideas? Thanks a bunch
Could be that media is just junk?
What would you recommend for dvd-r media and burning soft?

  2. Georgino,

Sorry for stating the obvious, but did you check the information on the left (DVD Players)? Check whether your DVD stand-alone (which you do not specify in your question) can actually handle + or - DVDs. My suggestion would be to first check with RW DVDs rather than producing a collection of coasters...

Secondly, there have been posts on this site about Nero 6 having problems in the DVD burning department - make sure you download the latest update for Nero 6. For DVD burning I stick with Nero 5.5 (if it ain't broke, don't fix it )

Finally, it might be the media. Again, check the information on the left (DVD Writers) to see other people's experiences with different media. In my view media is very much a matter of simply experimenting. Once you found something that works, stick with that. Once in a while (when I feel in the mood to experiment) I try different media - sometimes with good results, sometimes with bad.

I agree that it could very well be the media.

    Try this ...

Take a DVD you want to back up that is a DVD5 disc (single layer) and RIP it with DVD DECRYPTER in ISO READ mode.

This creates a single large ISO file on your computer's HDD. This ISO file is called an IMAGE file.

Now put DVD DECRYPTER in ISO WRITE mode and select the ISO from your HDD and burn it to a DVD

If it works in your stand alone then you know the issue is not so much the media but with the OTHER burning methods you are using.

If this DVD doesn't work then you have major problems which are probably related to the media.

If you want to test a DVD9 back up then use whatever program you normally use for that (such as DVDShrink or DVD2ONE etc.) but set the final file size to around 4000MB (which is a little bit shy of 4.0GB)

Now most of the programs that compress DVD9 discs will spit out a VIDEO_TS folder with your DVD FILES ready for burning.

At this point use ImgTool Classic. This is a FREEWARE program that you can download from either this site or the doom9 website

ImgTool Classic will create an ISO IMAGE file from your VIDEO_TS folder (actually you put your VIDEO_TS folder under another folder and select NOT the VIDEO_TS folder but the folder that IT is in).

So for instance create a FOLDER called MOVIE and in that MOVIE FOLDER create another FOLDER called VIDEO_TS and put your DVD VIDEO FILES in that VIDEO_TS folder. Start up ImgTool Classic and select the MOVIE folder (not the VIDEO_TS folder).

When ImgTool Classic is done you will have an ISO IMAGE file that you can then burn with DVD Decrypter.

Again if this works then GREAT but if not then you have issues that COULD be media related but if your final DVD is less than 4.0GB and you still have problems then it might be like a burner malfunction or something really odd unrelated to MEDIA.

Really poorly made cheap media can often have trouble when you go over the 4.0GB mark (which is approximately 4096MB).

Most decent discs will not have trouble if you stay below 4.20GB (which is around 4300MB though I try to stay around 4200MB - 4250MB). Only the best of blank media can handle full size which is approximately 4.37GB or approximately 4480MB for DVD-R and something like 4435MB for DVD+R

  5. Thank you guys for your advice you mentioned a lot I did not know. I will try to keep size of the movie around 4GB and try ISO mode as well. If that will not work I will get some media other guys likes. (any preference? – I heard Riteks are good). And definitely I will try to set burning process to 1x only.
Also I red that maybe I should reinstall my XP as well. After couple of year running it with any possible cd / dvd authoring software, and codec – there maybe something in my machine causing this problem. What do you guys think?
But so far all the indications are pointing to el-cheepo media.
All the stand alones are capable of DVD-R (don’t know exact model (I tried them in friends house – one was brand new JVC XV-N40BK (should play DVD -+ R and RW and SVCD/VCD/PAL/NTSC etc ..) and other is Samsung)
Mine one is JVC XV-S500BK – Plays only DVD-R (not +R or +- RW)
    Thank again for your help

Well the problem is you are using PRINCO media.

PRINCO is really shit ass stuff.

I've never used them but most people find that you definately will have problems if you go over 4.0 GB (about 4096MB) and some even try to keep 'em around 3.9GB or even 3.8GB

Return them if you can otherwise use them but don't go over 4GB and when you use them be sure to buy something good like Ritek brand media or Taiyo Yuden or Maxell etc.

  9. Hi John "FulciLives",
    so here is the scoop
I have burn dvd5 with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode (using 1x speed) as you suggested and it works like charm. Also I tried make same movie using DVDXCopy Xpress and works as well (not as good as the first one) but well enough. I have cheep DVD player in one of my PC and this one has real hard time to play DVD-R and played the first movie I made with Decrypter in ISO mode just perfect. Did not played the second one made by DVDXCopy. But my DVD player JVC plays both now just fine.
I still agreed media is shit – but some guys mentioned that this 4x Princo is not as bad as the 2x used to be. From now on I will buy just the one you mentioned Ritek G04, Taiyo Yuden or Maxell.
So Nero6 is shit crap as well and CloneDVD too (at least with this Media for sure)

    Thanks again for your help

Well glad you got it to work.

Just use DVD DECRYPTER if it is a SINGLE LAYER disc. If it is a dual layer disc then use DVDShrink (which is free) to reduce it to around 4.0GB (roughly 4096MB) then use ImgTool Classic (another free program) to make an ISO IMAGE file from the output you get from DVDShrink. Then you can burn that ISO IMAGE with DVD DECRYPTER.

Problem solved but yeah in the future do buy something better such as MAXELL or TAIYO YUDEN or RITEK G04 and then you don't have to worry so much especially with the final SIZE of the DVD.
