  1. Okay, I am a newbie..and I am trying to understand few things here. Please help me out.

I bought this AMW v 101 from circuit city last week. I am burning SVCDS from DIVX avi movies. Here are my questions. I wil be giving this DVD player and the SVCDs as gift to my family. They are in the PAL world.

    1) AMW v 101s pecs say NTSC/PAL compatible. What does this mean?
Lets say I have this setup AWM v101 -> NTSC SVCD -> PAL TV.
Does this mean that my NTSC SVCD will play with out any problems on PAL TV ?

2)I used DVD2SVCD with CCE to convert DIVX avi source (23.97 fps, 512x368 (1.39:1)) to SVCD using the doom9.org guide. I did 2 SVCDs so far. They play perfectly well on my DVD player connected to NTSC tv here in the US. Will these SVCDs play with out any problems if connected to PAL TV if AMW v101 dvd player can output both NTSC or PAL video formats.

    3) If they are not going to work, Can I do something to make sure the SVCDs play well when connected to PAL tv.

    4) I was attempting to use DVD2SVCD with CCE to convert a divx avi source (29.95 fps, 352x288 (1.22:1)) to a VCD. 29.95 fps tells me that it is a PAL avi source. When I made the VCD using the DVD2SVCD ( I selected 4:3 aspect ratio), the video came out well, but there is no sound.

    What did I miss here?

I would appreciate very much any of your suggestions.

    Thanks veyr much

Circuit City, does that mean you are in the USA. 110v Power supply. PAL world, Europe by any chance, 240v Power. Have you taken this into consideration?

Many (most) European TV's are multi standard and will accept bot Pal and NTSC signals when connected by composite, Svideo or RGB. So it depends on what TV they have.

Wrong, that is NTSC. PAL is always 25fps.

Don't know, give more detail on what settings you used. Does the avi play ok in WMP. What does virtualdub say under file->File info etc.

Yeah, I am in the US. I wil be using a converter so 240v wouldnt be a problem

Thank you.. my bad. I havent really changed in settings. I am using DVD2SVCD. I selected the aspect ratio 4:3. And here is the avi source information from GSPOT:

    Video :352x288, Bitrate :413 kb/s, FPS: 29.95,
    Audio: Bitrate: 48 kb/s (24/ch, stereo) CBR , Fs = 24000 Hz.

Because of the width being 352 I decided to convert this to VCD as opposed to SVCD. And I used CCE as econder in DVD2SVCD. Encoding mode is CBR.

I played the VCD on WMP. I get only the video. No sound. Here is the FIle information from VirtualDub.

    Video Track:

    Size, fps : 720X480, 29.970
    Frames(times):105942(58:54)

    Audio Track:

Format : 48Khz stereo, 224 kbps layer II
    #of frames : 184457
    Total size : 121050K

Audio frames and video frames #s are different. Is that normal?

Do I have to use different settings in DVD2SVCD for different fps?
I worked with 23 fps, and I didnt have any problems.

    Thanks for your help

  4. That video and audio info look fine. I am not that familiar with DVD2SVCD (havn't used it in a while), is there a setting to tell it to not multiplex the audio and video back together. Perhaps that got set by mistake. I know there should be a setiing saying do not delete temp files. If this is on the audio file should be available in the working directory somewhere.

    Sorry couldn't be more help.
