I think I understand. Your assumption is correct. Any brand of DVD read/writer will come with a package of software to allow burning. Common ones are Ulead Movie Factory 2 or Sonic MyDVD which will allow you to do some editing, authoring, and burning.
The biggest decision is generally whether you want a drive that is compatible with both the -R and +R standards or only one standard. Dual standard drives are made by fewer manufacturers so the choice is limited. -
Thanx...yeah I am looking at getting a -+RW burner. ANd if I understand what I am being told about the "authoring" part. I NEED something like Sonic DVD or Ulead to go WITH Premiere but I am not sure what the distinction is between them.

Are sites like Pricewatch.com and TigerDirect.com reliable sources for parts or do I need to be careful who I buy from?
I am also looking on ebay and finding great prices... -
TigerDirect.com has the nec writer on sale for 119$ and the LG burner on sale for 89$ ....
they usually always have great prices .. so does livewarehouse
but then again dell will ussually match those prices for parts if you are buying a system if you talk to them live --- ibm does also (sometimes)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

ahhhh...just found the $99NEC on TigerDirect.com Funny, I had to search specifically for it. If I wewnt to the DVD Burner section it didnt list it. It says it doesn't come with screws or cables. I figure I can get screws easy enough but is the cable something that would already be in the system I bought or do I have to go buy those as well??????? -
Or what about this one...NEC ND-1300A 4X DVD+RW/+R & DVD-RW/-R dual format DVD Burner and plus a free Roxio Easy CD creator 5.3.4 DVD edition software CD for $119
ANother question... Will any firewire PCI card work with XP? I am seeing alot of them saying Win98,ME, and 2000 but none mention XP...
Started a new thread with up to date info and to cut out the unnecessary info already discussed. Thanx to all who have helped so far. I just have 3 items to purchase now and have a couple of questions... here is the link to the thread....https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=186400 -
NEC ND-1300A 4X DVD+RW/+R & DVD-RW/-R dual format DVD Burner sounds good to me - maybe someone who has one can say something about it ...
i would stick with an ADS firewire card myself (i do)..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
thanx...sorry bout the other thread... if I could delet this one and go with the other I would. I was trying to keep things simplified.
anyway... I found an ADS firewire card that inlcludes tons of software on pricewatch.
SOFTWARE- CD for Windows containing Camcorder drivers, Ulead VideoStudio 4.01 with DV SmartPlay, TeVeo Live video sharing software, DirectX 8, MyDVD, Microsoft's Media Player 7 and Media Encoder 7, Acrobat Reader, PhotoIsland.com, FireNet Networking sampler.
but here again the issue I am concerned about is wheather or not it works with XP. It lists all but XP. REQUIRES- Intel Celeron 400MHz or AMD K6/2-400Mhz or faster, available PCI slot, CD-ROM drive and Windows 98/98SE/2000/Me.
Do I keep looking? -
no -- it works perfect with XP .. i use several of them with XP ...

ok so the one I listed... is that a good deal for around $45? I was told to get an authoring software and I think Ulead is considered just that.
can you explain what it is that an authoring program does and why I need it in addition WITH premiere 6.5...
If this Ulead program will do it then I can look for DVD burners without software right? -
Authoring programs makes all the files you will burn onto a disk to make it a DVD. The files are like .bups, ifos, .vobs, etc. The names are not important now, but the programs you use will make the for you. IfoEdit is a good one, for example. The Ulead products you mention, like Video Studio, DVD Workshop, etc, will not only author your files, but burn them in the same process. TMPGEnc, can make MPEG-2 files and demultiplex them into two files IfoEdit can use to make .vobs and bub, etc. that you can use to burn onto your DVD.
Hello. -
So if I get the firewire card that comes with all that software I will be fine? I won't need to get another program? Will the software included allow me to take my edited "movies" from premiere and burn them onto a DVD? If so...is the one I found a good deal then?
Its actually $50... and is there anything that comes with Canopus ADVC-100 that would cause some of this stuff to be obsolete? -
Hard to say. I have both Video Studio 6 & 7 on my system, along with TMPGEnc, AviSynth, Virtual Dub, DVD Movie Factory, etc. I still use them all from time to toime, not because they are so specialized, but because each has its own way, a personality, if you will,of doing certain things. One day I may even be able to afford Premiere, and even when I do, I doubt if I uninstall everything else.

"If you are capturing from a DV device, make sure that your FireWire/IEEE-1394 adapter is OHCI-compliant and DirectShow-compatible. MyDVD does not support older FireWire/IEEE-1394 adapters that were designed for "Video for Windows". " -
the bios in a ads card is upgradable -- old or new , they are fine ... they are the ONLY firewire card recomended by avid and sony also recomends them (if you dont have a sony ilink) , and also laird recomends them ...
