Lets just say mine didn't come bundled with anything

Also..when choosing a DVD burner..are there any brands I should avoid? What things do I need to consider? If it comes with software like Ulead will it do whatever it is that Premiere can't?

  3. I think I understand. Your assumption is correct. Any brand of DVD read/writer will come with a package of software to allow burning. Common ones are Ulead Movie Factory 2 or Sonic MyDVD which will allow you to do some editing, authoring, and burning.

The biggest decision is generally whether you want a drive that is compatible with both the -R and +R standards or only one standard. Dual standard drives are made by fewer manufacturers so the choice is limited.

Thanx...yeah I am looking at getting a -+RW burner. ANd if I understand what I am being told about the "authoring" part. I NEED something like Sonic DVD or Ulead to go WITH Premiere but I am not sure what the distinction is between them.

Are sites like Pricewatch.com and TigerDirect.com reliable sources for parts or do I need to be careful who I buy from?

I am also looking on ebay and finding great prices...

TigerDirect.com has the nec writer on sale for 119$ and the LG burner on sale for 89$ ....

they usually always have great prices .. so does livewarehouse

but then again dell will ussually match those prices for parts if you are buying a system if you talk to them live --- ibm does also (sometimes)

The only NEC Burner I see on sale around that price is actualy set at $99. It is just a "+RW". Is that a big deal? ANd I don't see the LG burner you are talking about but I see a BenQ one for $89. But the NEC one comes with Ulead.

ahhhh...just found the $99NEC on TigerDirect.com Funny, I had to search specifically for it. If I wewnt to the DVD Burner section it didnt list it. It says it doesn't come with screws or cables. I figure I can get screws easy enough but is the cable something that would already be in the system I bought or do I have to go buy those as well???????

ANother question... Will any firewire PCI card work with XP? I am seeing alot of them saying Win98,ME, and 2000 but none mention XP...

Started a new thread with up to date info and to cut out the unnecessary info already discussed. Thanx to all who have helped so far. I just have 3 items to purchase now and have a couple of questions... here is the link to the thread....https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=186400

thanx...sorry bout the other thread... if I could delet this one and go with the other I would. I was trying to keep things simplified.

anyway... I found an ADS firewire card that inlcludes tons of software on pricewatch.

SOFTWARE- CD for Windows containing Camcorder drivers, Ulead VideoStudio 4.01 with DV SmartPlay, TeVeo Live video sharing software, DirectX 8, MyDVD, Microsoft's Media Player 7 and Media Encoder 7, Acrobat Reader, PhotoIsland.com, FireNet Networking sampler.

but here again the issue I am concerned about is wheather or not it works with XP. It lists all but XP. REQUIRES- Intel Celeron 400MHz or AMD K6/2-400Mhz or faster, available PCI slot, CD-ROM drive and Windows 98/98SE/2000/Me.

    Do I keep looking?

ok so the one I listed... is that a good deal for around $45? I was told to get an authoring software and I think Ulead is considered just that.

can you explain what it is that an authoring program does and why I need it in addition WITH premiere 6.5...

If this Ulead program will do it then I can look for DVD burners without software right?

Authoring programs makes all the files you will burn onto a disk to make it a DVD. The files are like .bups, ifos, .vobs, etc. The names are not important now, but the programs you use will make the for you. IfoEdit is a good one, for example. The Ulead products you mention, like Video Studio, DVD Workshop, etc, will not only author your files, but burn them in the same process. TMPGEnc, can make MPEG-2 files and demultiplex them into two files IfoEdit can use to make .vobs and bub, etc. that you can use to burn onto your DVD.

So if I get the firewire card that comes with all that software I will be fine? I won't need to get another program? Will the software included allow me to take my edited "movies" from premiere and burn them onto a DVD? If so...is the one I found a good deal then?

Its actually $50... and is there anything that comes with Canopus ADVC-100 that would cause some of this stuff to be obsolete?

Hard to say. I have both Video Studio 6 & 7 on my system, along with TMPGEnc, AviSynth, Virtual Dub, DVD Movie Factory, etc. I still use them all from time to toime, not because they are so specialized, but because each has its own way, a personality, if you will,of doing certain things. One day I may even be able to afford Premiere, and even when I do, I doubt if I uninstall everything else.

50$ w/ the software package is a good deal .. some of it you will not need .. but w/ the canopus and w/ the ads -- you have everything you will need ... (except time)

Alright sounds good... Guess I am set...

I plan on getting that ADS firewire then along with the Cnopus ADVC-100
and then get that DVD burner or one like it that supports both "-+RW"..and I think I should be set. Including Premiere which was a "gift" this will all come under 1400 and I have all of you to thank. Now lets just hope it works

The one I found seems to be an older model. The discription doesnt include XP. and the version of Ulead is 4.01 This makes me hesitant to go with it. I can get the recent version form the ADS site but the software is all trial verison excepct for...Video studio 6.0... it seems the authoring program Movie Factory is a trial so does this mean I wil have to spend more money on an authoring program??

  24. It does pay to be a little careful about a Firewire card. They are not all create d equal. Here is a note from MyDVD 5.0 about it.

"If you are capturing from a DV device, make sure that your FireWire/IEEE-1394 adapter is OHCI-compliant and DirectShow-compatible. MyDVD does not support older FireWire/IEEE-1394 adapters that were designed for "Video for Windows". "

Well I spent about $6-$7 more and got what should be a newer card along with newer Ulead software which doesn't seem to be just trial versions.

Here is part of the description...

    PYRO 1394DV
A OHCI Compliant and Microsoft DirectX Compatible Card

It comes with Ulead Video Studio 6.0 SE DVD, DVD Movie Factory SE, DVD PictureShow SE.

    Hopefully I got something decent.

Thanx guys! I will probably stick with v6.0 for now and slow down on the money I am spending... I have spent right at about $1336 and I would like to get a new monitor but I will need to get a couple of cables and would like to get a new surge protector so I will be right around my $1400 budget without the monitor(will use the one I have) or the upgrade in software...but I can wait on those for a couple of months THANX AGAIN ALL!!!
