  1. What authoring software in available that will make a DVD-9 ? I know Scenarist will do it, but that's WAY too expensive .

I don't care about fancy menus or encoding feature, I just want to be able to put 140 minutes of video and my AC-3 surround files on one DVD.

And, by the way, the client wants to replicate 1000 discs.

Will TMPGEnc Author do it ?

I know DVD Maestro can do this but the program is no longer made or supported BUT many many people still use it and you can find some guides on how to use it. It is nearly as full featured as Scenarist.

Although you still can't purchase a new copy it does pop up now and again on eBay at reasonable prices.

As for TMPGEnc DVD Author I am not sure but I don't think it supports DVD9 just DVD5 (single layer).

  4. Hey BJ_M,

Are you sure Reel DVD will do it? I thought I saw a comparison chart somewhere that said that ReelDVD will not do DVD-9...

  6. I went to Sonic's site and it said this about DVD Producer:

DVD Producer can make Dual layer projects with a DVD-5 Video zone.

    What does that mean?

  7. Here is something else from the FAQ section about DVD Producer:

Can I make Dual-Layer DVDs with DVD Producer?
Yes. However, it’s not currently possible to make a Dual Layer DVD-Video. It is possible to premaster a DVD-5 Video zone with up to 4GB of ROM data making a Dual Layer DVD Hybrid title (DVD-Video and DVD-ROM on the same DVD). This is done using a combination of DVD Producer and Sonic ROM Formatter (which is included with every purchase of DVD Producer)

    What does THIS mean ?

I was planning on buying a DLT tape drive for submitting the files to the replicating house...

sounds like marketing dept. description of a piss poor layer break to me ..

I don't use it - so im not really sure what they mean ..

i don't remember on thier site either if they said Producer supported writing to a DLT drive .. it should (for what it costs) -- if it dosn't .. kinda useless ..

dvdlab for example supports 9gig dvd's , but no layer break functions (i believe ) and no writting to authoring hardware (201 and DLT) which must be ussually made directly ..

  12. I sent an email with this question to the SONIC support dept, but maybe you guys know better...

What does this mean ? What is a "layer break" and what is a "DVD-5 video zone"

I am planning on buying a DLT tape drive for submitting the files to the replicating house...

layer break is the point where the laser switchs from the low layer to the upper layer .. in addition to this - you can have the laser start again at the begining of the disk or just "go up" and in fact play the 2nd half backwards .. 2nd option gives faster layer switching but first method, on some players. results in a better play ..

with DLT , each half is written to a seperate DLT tape in a special format ..

This is the key difference between 'home' and 'commercial' Authoring software. If your going to produce a DVD-9, then you have to cough up the $$$ for the software, no freeware.
