The 4-pin power connector on an ATX power supply,I thought this was used only on socket 478 motherboards? I bought an MSI socket 462 motherboard and it has the 4-pin power connector? I hooked it up without connecting the 4-pin power connector and runs normally.
Why does the board have this connector if it isn't needed?

I have one on my AMD MB (Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro) and it's for an independent regulated power supply for the CPU. My manual says it won't run without it.
