    can someone tell me what audio i am likely to get from an xvid - i only get stereo as best and wondered if im doing something wrong??

    i pull the audio with v/dub and then put it back together in tmpg

    is this ok??

    XviD is a video codec. If the container format is AVI, the audio can be anything that can be in an AVI container, and that is literally almost anything. WAV, MP3, AC3 (the latter 2 most common) where mp3 is mostly stereo, and ac3 can be stereo or 5.1.
    What you get out of TMPGEnc depends on what you do. Only DVD support anything "above" stereo (=5.1), but as 5.1 mostly is AC3, and TMPGEnc can't do AC3 encoding/decoding, you have to multiplex the AC3 audio with the video after encoding.
