  1. For the last few months I have been creating VCD's using the following proccess:

    SmartRipper -> DVD2AVI -> VFAPI Converter (v. 1.04BETA) -> Panasonic Encoder

    This has worked very well for me and I have been very pleased with the results and ease of use.

    Just recently I decided to try TMPGEnc. The results were very good; however, I had the problem where the video and audio on the VCD would go out of synch causing my Apex 703 to "slow down" the video to catch up. I read on this forum that multiplexing with the Xing Encoder would fix the problems (bbMPEG did not). Well, that post was correct... It fixed the VCD and it plays wonderfully!

    Problem is that ever since installing the Xing Encoder, my system can not open AVI files created using the VFAPI Converter software. When I go back to the procedure outlined above, the Panasonic encoder tells me unsupported or corupt file type. I get the same message through Windows Media Player and VDub... TMPGEnc can not open the AVI's either, but can directly open the D2V file...

    To resolve this issue, I tried the following:

    I tried uninstalling the Xing Encoder, no luck.
    I upgraded my Windows Media Player, no luck.
    I reinstalled the VFAPI Converter, no luck.

    - I have NOT tried to open any other AVI files as I don't have any on my system.
    - I am runnning Windows 98 SE.

    My questions:

    1. Is it possible that the Xing Encoder hosed my system this badly?
    2. Any suggestions on how I can get the AFAPI Converter working again on my system?

    (The readme in the AFAPI Converter program basically says "format C: /u" -- ugh!)

    Thanks!
