I've got a number of very good quality AVI files which I have been transferring to MPG and then onto DVD for play on my home DVD Player.
The AVIs play very smooth when playing through a Software Media Player such as DivX or VLC etc.
However, after I convert to MPG the playback on my PC Software DVD player, and also once burned onto DVD, in my standalone DVD player, the motion is a little "jerky".
Is there anyway I can improve this ?
My TMPGENC Settings are:
DVD PAL (MPEG-2 720*576 25fps CQ 100, Layer-2 48000Hz 384kps
Encode Mode : Non-Interlace
DC Component Precision : 10 Bits
Motion Search Precision : Highest Quality (very slow)
Has anyone else seen this problem ? Can it be fixed ?
Many thanks in advance.

In my ears, this sounds like a frame rate conversion problem. Could it be that the AVI's are 23.976 fps, and you used a PAL template in TMPGEnc when encoding?
/Mats -
Yes, I think I am Mats.
Do I just turn off the "do not convert frame" in the advance filter section of TMPGENC or is it not as simple as that -
May work, but to be safe, it's best to do a "real" frame rate conversion of the AVI to 25 fps before encoding. This has been discussed over and over again, but my method goes like this:
- Separate audio from video. (VirtualDub)
Change AVI frame rate to 25 fps (AVIFrate)
Decode audio to wav (App depends on audio format)
Compress wav (make it shorter timewise) (WavWorks or GoldWave timewarp)
Use new wav as audio source and 25 fps AVI as video source when encoding.
- Separate audio from video. (VirtualDub)

Thanks Mats, sounds like the system I used to use. I guess I was trying to cut one too many corners
Thanks once again for your help, much appreciated. -
I have the very same problem, but the framerate is correct.
My input AVI is 25 fps, and I use the same settings used by darkufo.
I even tried the conversion to VCD, but the problem remains, so I think it has to do with the conversion process, not the output format (DVD, SVCD, VCD).
If I check the "Do not frame rate conversion" in the Setting -> Advanded menu, the output MPEG is perfect (no "jerkyness") but is slighlty longer (a few minutes), so that the audio doesn't match.
Any idea?

All your problems have to do with field order just change field order to type A int he advanced section.

Yes, I agree - most PAL gear handles NTSC equally well, so instead of bothering too much with frame rate conversion and stuff, I encode to the same standard as the source.

I'll third that advice. :c)
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Well, I appear to have fixed my problem.
I encoded with Field Order of BOTTOM FIRST and NTSC. I Built and Burned to Disc, and is now plays flawlessly on my Home Player -

But the resulting video is jerky...
Fact is, I have other 25fps deinterlaced AVI (XviD) files, and I can convert them without any problem (using the very same settings).
I don't know why TMPGEnc behaves differently with the same kind of files.
Help...

Are you SURE that it is 25fps ?
Try loading it into a utility called GSPOT (free - find it on google). This will tell you what the file is and the codecs being used to play it.
Then try loading your other good avi into this to see the differences.
Does the "bad" file play ok as an AVI ? -
