Is there a way? I think I want to use the Panasonic DV Codec instead. I hear it's better.

i would not say its better .. but you can disable the either one

uninstall any codec by using regsvr32 with the /u command line switch or

here is a really good tip for all of you -- to reg and unreg ANY dll and/or OCX codec or directshow filter .. do the following:

If anyone has problems registering dll or ocx files, here's an easy way to register/unregister the files in Windows 95, 98, NT/2000 and XP.

Copy/paste the REGEDIT4 text below into a notepad and save the file as register.reg. Then double-click this file to merge it with the registry (make a backup of your registery before altering it).

Then, by right-clicking on any .dll or .ocx file, the options to Register/Unregister should be available in the Explorer context menu.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\dllfile\shell\ Register DLL\Command]
    @="RegSvr32.exe \"%1\""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\dllfile\shell\ Unregister DLL\Command]
    @="RegSvr32.exe /u \"%1\""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ocxfile\shell\ Register OCX\Command]
    @="RegSvr32.exe \"%1\""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ocxfile\shell\ UnRegister OCX\Command]
    @="RegSvr32.exe /u \"%1\""

well -- the compression is done IN the ADVC , you cant change that codec ..

Shoot. Sorry. I have 2 topics in my head right now.

You're right, of course. There must be something wrong with my VirtualDub installation, as no codecs are being shown when trying to capture from ADVC-100 using VirtualDub.

And I also heard that opening/working with AVI files in VD that are captured from a DV source, the Panasonic yields "more consistent" results; said another way, I've read that some people have some problems with the Canopus codec.

I'm also going to try the Adaptec Codec.

    READ THIS
DV ... the compression is done at the source ,
not with the capture program ... you can install every DV codec known to man (girl, alien whatever) and it still would not change a thing ..

also virtualdub not the best for capturing DV (which is a transfer) .. you can even use windows own movie maker for the capture (transfer) part because as i said -- the compression is already done .

installing a different DV codec is only importaint when you either re-render a DV to something else (even a different DV codec) or edit it (sometimes)
