Not sure what you mean by standard format. An avi with Divx3 video is pretty normal. Avi files are encoded using both a video and audio codec. There are quite a few different ones but they would all be considered normal.

If you want to change it into a different codec then Virtualdub can do that.

  4. Thanks guys, but this Avi won't play on Win media player unless codec installed and i need something to be compatible with regular windows player without extra updates... VirtualDub did great job but output file was approximately 4Gig...My original file size a little over 30Mb so i think i'll try convert to mpeg..

You will always need a codec installed to play or convert a file. Gspot will test any avi and tell you the required codecs and if you have them installed on your system. I hate to suggest it... but you could always install a "codec pack" which will give you most of the common ones. It's usually recommended to test and install only the ones that you need. Look in the Tools section for Gspot and codecs.

BTW, it sounds like you converted your avi into an uncompressed file, that's why it's so large. If you want to keep it compressed then you need to select a codec under video>compression. Of course, you need to have codecs installed for you to do that.

Mpeg1 is one of the only formats that I know can play in WMP without any codecs.

  6. One more stupid question: (yes, i've seen 'how to guides') Wonder any freeware or commercial payware exist to convert avi div3 to dvd with just few clicks ...something like Open avi file and click Convert to dvd format.

TMPGE will convert it to mpeg2 then u have to "author"it with something, maybe dvd author. Im not sure, but if ur avi file wont play due to not having the codec, then tmpge may npt work without the codec.
