I just got the NEC ND-1300A from TigerDirect for $119. It came with some software that I've wanted to update, namely, Ulead VideoStudio. Included also were MovieFactory 2 and PictureShow, but no Nero DVD burning software. I've really liked using Nero with my VeloCD burner, and think I'd like to use Nero for DVD burning as well. Any idea where I could get it?
I have a Pioneer slot drive DVD-106S that I really like, and a TDK VeloCD (reads 40X) drive that the Nero burning software has made a dream to use. I need to pick which one to replace with this new DVD burner and I'm not sure what makes the most sense. Any suggestions?
At $119, the drive didn't come with any installation guide or user's manual. Where can I get it? Is there anything special I should know before installing it?
Is there some media that is not recommended to use with the 1300A? What are some brands that seem to work best?
Thanks,
Tim

there's nothing special that you need to know about this drive...
I have it and its exellent...
...you can download nero6 if you want... wich is the best option for dvd and cdr writing..
regarding to what media you should not use......
stay away from princo and cheap media...
i have used memorex, imation, maxell, philips, and they all work fine...
Aslo, you can download a firmware update if you want your drive to handle cheaper media...Increase knowledge, increase sorrow. -
Thanks for the tip.
I just remembered - I have the Promise Ultra133 TX2 ATA/133 Controller Card, which should allow me to keep all three DVD/CD drives. Hopefully, Mid Tower has room, as I've already got three hard drives in it.
Is there a "best" burning software that works well with both DVD/CD Rewriteable media? -
I got the NEC 1300A too that came with a 'Driver CD', thou there is no drivers on the CD, there is Installation Guide and Manual in .pdf format.
Here is the content of the CD:

my nec nd-1300 came just 30 minutes ago. Thank you UPS Santa Clause.
I'm in the process of burning my first dvd today, and so far so good.
I bought a version of the drive that has an external case... nice all rugged aluminum black chassis and is usb 2.0. One of the better investments already i'd have to say.Arguing on the internet is like participating in the special olympics. In the end, you may win, but you're still a complete retard. -
Thanks for the PDFs, Dubber. They'll be nice to have.
divi2323,
I like the idea of an external USB case. Do you know if they can house an internal IDE burner? Where's a good source for more information on it and where do you get them?
All,
What burning software is most recommended?
Thanks,
Tim -
I've had this burner for awhile and am quite happy. I do have to second the above comment about staying away from cheap media. First of all, the official firmware doesn't even recognize alot of media, and the burns on others are useless. Stay away from Optodisk for dvd movies, the playback is terrible. I use Ritek and have had no problems whatsoever. The drive won't burn dvd-r at 1x, but Ritek 1x media burns at 2x for me without any problem. This is useful if you want to save money as compared to the Ritek 4x media.
As far as burning software, I only use RecordNow Max 4.5, a great program. -

I'm sure you can get them cheaper on ebay, but this one is a rock solid full metal one with plastic front and back. Also, this one has an AC adapter which I'm not too fond of. I'd rather it be a straight computer cable to the back of it.Arguing on the internet is like participating in the special olympics. In the end, you may win, but you're still a complete retard. -
Okay, I got home and it turns out that I have a free drive bay, but I don't have an extra IDE cable or a power Y-splitter. If I want to use the drive, I have to replace either the VeloCD Rewriter or the Pioneer DVD-106S.
Is it better to have a DVD player with a DVD burner or a CD burner with a DVD burner? -

Unless you use some sort of hacked firmware the NEC (like all DVD burners) will only rip at 2x
That's why you keep your DVD-ROM ... not only will it rip faster but it saves your DVD burner since ripping can degrade performance of the burner ... or so they say.
I've had my DVD-ROM for a long time now

Unless you use some sort of hacked firmware the NEC (like all DVD burners) will only rip at 2xi must have issues with my system too, but have not been able to resolve them (have solicited help from this forum but still no higher speeds than 4.9x...true also for my Lite-On 166 that others have managed up to 15x).

I haven't calculated it, but my Pioneer 106S rips much faster than the NEC ND-1300A. Maybe it's because it's a DVD/CD-RW drive, but it also takes much longer to do the initial read on any media I put in. I'm really glad I left my Pioneer 106S installed.

if you rip with Decrypter it tells you the rip speed, both in MB per sec and x.x rate in the log-window directly below its interface (unless you disabled it). -
My 1300 never ripped faster than 4x, and I think that DVD wasn't encrypted. I rip with an old used 8x DVDROM that rips up to 7.5x wihtout issues.
My NEC and the newest DVDDecryptor don't get along. Only coasters I've made are from DVDDEcryptor (newest build). It doesn't implement the buffer-underun correctly. Nero 6.0.19 has no issues with burning DVD ISO's, no matter what I'm doing so I use it.
