I am trying to encode a AVI file (VIDEO: mpeg-2, size: 720x480, 29.970 fps, 7500 kbps. AUDIO: ac3, 48000Hz, 192 kbps.) to SVCD using the mplayer decoder (Quicktime errors out when reading the file, but mplayer works).

    The resulting info is:

INFO: [yuvscaler] yuvscaler (version 1.7.0) is a general scaling utility for yuv frames
    Tue Oct 28 12:09:52 CST 2003
    INFO: [yuvscaler] (C) 2001-2002 Xavier Biquard <xbiquard@free.fr>
INFO: [yuvscaler] yuvscaler -h for help, or man yuvscaler
**ERROR: [yuvscaler] Could'nt read YUV4MPEG header!
**ERROR: [mpeg2enc] Could not read YUV4MPEG2 header: system error (failed read/write)!

I am in Panther (10.3) - any thoughts?

  2. Not enough information here - post the whole output, to my email major4@mac.com

Not sure what other information there is. That was a cut & paste from the whole information portion of the process window. There was nothing else.

I suspect some of the fmpegX binaries need to be recompiled for Panther Some, like mpeg2enc, don't appear to have been compiled on Panther.

It doesn't seem an output using "Decode with mplayer".. are you sure it is enabled and which preset are you using?

No, they don't need to be recompiled.

Well, here are the steps I took and now everything seems fine. I really don't think any of these solved the problem (except maybe #4), but things work nicely.

    1. Copied the mplayer from the latest MplayerOSX (from a few days ago) to a set directory (this was copied from within the mplayer.app within the MPlayerOSX.app file).
    2. Downloaded the binaries from MplayerOSX project "for Panther".
    3. Re-ran the engine installer using these new binaries (and the old mpeg2enc).
    4. Installed the Mpeg2 codec for Quicktime.

Now, the encoding works - but I now make sure to select "Use Quicktime for decoding"

I am using the SVCD preset, btw.

Steps 1 and 2 are wrong. The "for Panther" binaries, despite their exciting name, have bugs and don't work better. They may eventually work for some processes, but will fail with others. The only binaries not having bugs are the ones mentioned in the ffmpegX engines installer and they have been choosen for a reason.

By the way, if you select "Decode with Quicktime", the said binaries are not used (as Quicktime is used instead to decode, and it will indeed require the mpeg-2 player component to decode mpeg-2).

same occures to me when trying to convert .mov files into mpeg2 for svcd. ( different .mov files and different tries )
    video: size 480x576 , 2539 kbps, audioī: mpeg 2 44100hz, 224 kbps
    using mpeg2enc
    macOs X 10.3. panther
    result info is:
info : ( yuvscaler ) couldnīt read frame header: bad header magic!
ERROR: (yuvscaler) coudnīt read frame number 43871

the number of teh not readed frame differs from try to try

I had the same problems (10.3) altough I did a clean install of ffmpegx and binaries.

    After restarting these problems disappeared.

Well, after it is done with this encoding (12 more hours), I'll put back the old binaries recommended and try it again with the test clip. All I know is the test clip came out perfect with the above combination - but, like you said, it used Quicktime to do the decoding. So, riight now all is well and will go back to the required mplayer and mencoder.

Off topic - this is sooooo much faster than forty-two. 12 hours into encoding and I am 50% complete - forty-two told me that it would take 79 hours.
