  1. is it just me, or does it seems like svcd's colour depth is low? when i compare svcd to divx/xvid, the difference in colour is drastic. svcd looks dull and gloomy in terms of colour, while divx/xvid has bright, vibrant, and rich.

    any reason for this?

    Depends on how you create the SVCD,if you use DVD2ONE to create the SVD the results will be "near DVD quality".

    I didn't know DVD2one could create SVCDs

    all mpeg2 used for dvd and svcd is 8 bit .. there is no reduction in bitdepth between dvd and svcd

    you can use DVD2ONE by compressing to SVCD size file. Demux with TMPEG. Convert ac3 to mp2 with HeadAC3he. Multiplex with TMPEG as an SVCD stream.
