I've got a Toshiba 3109 that works wounderfly......
If I only wanted DVD playback (my wife thinks I'm nutz)

I want to play VCD SVCD xVCD SxVCD and what ever else is out there.

    I'd like MP3 playback but it's not a prioraty.

I don't want to hunt for "special" CD-Rs to work in it.

I want good picture quality too.

    THANKS,
    gNOME

  2. Three brilliant standalones that play the works everything you need including mp3s are Cyberhome AD512, Logix 3000 and alba 103 ( if you can hunt one down) not alba 104.

    Based on your priorities:
    1. VCD, SVCD, xVCD, SxVCD playback
    2. CDR / CDRW media (all brands)
    3. Quality playback
    4. MP3 playback optional

I'd recommend either the Pioneer DV-343 or DV-434. The DV-343 I believe is on sale at Amazon for slightly over $100 US. Costco as the DV-434 for $149.

I agree. I have the pioneer dv-434. It's a progressive scan player so it really enhances the quality of every dvd or vcd/svcd you put in. It won't play mp3's, but it plays everything else. Oh... and it won't play minidvds... but I've never even seen one anyway.

  7. Any Asian made DVD player will play VCD's and SVCD's, I have the APEX 600a, APEX 660 ( you can macrovison hack with a simple CD-R program, no opening up case- flash rom) and the APEX 500W. The 500 and 660 can be bought for under $100 and they do play MP3's.
Also orion, Daewoo, KLH, Sampo make DVD players that play VCD, SVCD, MP3's. they can also be purchased at around $100-$120 also.

Before you buy anything... go to your local electronics store and put a SVCD/VCD/MP3/etc. in the the player you are considering and make sure it works. That way you can see for yourself before buying. Also, check out the dvd players section on this site. It has a great layout of what ones will work for you.
