  2. Use the divx encoder

  3. How small of a file size do you want? I do SVCD mpeg2 files to divx via virtualdub without problems. Typically if the mpeg2 file = 1.5GB or so I can get the divx file to about 650 - 700MB using a 2 pass encode.

    In the divx 5.1 codec settings I disable profiles.
    set bit rate to 650 kbps
    scene change = 30%
    psychovisual = fast
    encode as progressive, keyframes = 300
    For the first pass I set performance/quality to Fastest, for the 2nd pass I set it to Standard.

    My audio compression settings are Lame mp3 @ 128kbps CBR stereo.
    For the first pass I don't run any audio - set virtual dub Audio options to No Audio for the first pass.

    VirtualDub video filters:
    resize - set to 640x480 to get the correct aspect ratio.
    null - crop out the black bars if your movie is letterboxed.
    I run the filters on both passes.

    I've only done 3 SVCD formatted movies with the 5.1 codec and so far so good with those settings but I'm sure they can be tweaked a bit so that it runs slightly faster on my system.
    I've an AMD 1800+ running at 1533Mhz and a pair of WD 80GB 7200rpm HDs and it can take up to 8 or 9 hours to do a full 2 pass encode here. Running on WinXP home and I set the virtualdub.exe process to a lower than normal priority so I can do other things while the encoding is going.

  5. You should try Dr DivX. It's probably the easiest way of getting video into DivX I've found yet.
