  1. I'm starting the research. Will my NEC-1100A read PAL DVD's (purchased in US)? If yes is there a way to convert to the PAL to NTSC with DVD Shrink or do we have to go through the rip VOB's to MPEG-2, etc?

You can't convert just by using a transcoder. Where do you live PAL or NTSC land? Have you looked up your player in the DVD Player database on the left?

If your player (and TV) can play it, you'll save loads of time in not having to completely re-author the DVD.

You may just need a region hack. Maybe there's info from other owners in the same database.

  3. My NEC 1100A is a PC writer not a table top. I'm in NTSC land. If my computer writer can read PAL. That's what I don't know. I've cheched the web for specs but there's no mention of PAL/NTSC.

Yes. But I was hopeful you had a player that may handle it. :c)

Your writer will handle either provided it set for the same region, but I'd recommend you rip from your DVDrom drive and save the writer for burns only.

  5. Gees, Thanks for the response. Do you know how I can determine if my writer can read region 2 & 4. I'm here in region 1, US.

No, except to try it. :c) I can only go by mine which can not be changed from the region I'm in. It was determined when I installed the drive.

Do you not have a DVDrom drive? I'm also curious if the DVD is sold in U.S. why it is not the same region and why it's PAL. I've never seen that.

  7. I don't have a ROM only the writer. The DVD I'm considering is a collection of comedy shorts being sold on ebay out of Australia. The price is advantageous and there is no competing source here in the US. I don't mind the work to conform the video to the NTSC and obviuosly, I've not tried this process.

Well, above you said "purchased in U.S" so that lead me to believe otherwise.

That price may not be as advantageous when you read through some of what will be involved in converting it - if you value what used to be your free time. :c) But, of course, that's up to you.

Lots of reading to do while it is on its way to you. Good luck with it. :c)

PS - Do not be surprised if what you receive is far, far less than the DVD quality you are used to on rented and purchased discs, especially if many episodes are on one disc.

A computer can display either PAL or NTSC

A DVD-ROM or DVD BURNER bought in the USA will be locked to REGION 1 but you can use DVD DECRYPTER to RIP the movie to your HDD regardless of what region the DVD is (and it can be NTSC or PAL).

Once you RIP it to your HDD in either FILE mode or ISO mode it is now still either PAL or NTSC as the original but it is now REGION FREE.

As far as converting a PAL DVD to NTSC DVD you need to read this thread:
