  1. OK...I have a .AVI file that I had wanted to get to MPEG (eventually to DVD). I used GSpot to determine if I have the correct codec...windows media player would not play this .avi file. Gspot told me to get the Divx5.0 codec (I downloaded Divx5.0.7 or something) and re-ran it through GSpot. Now it tells me that I have the right codec for playing the video file...but windows media player still does not play the file. I also tried playing through a DivX Player...and it only displayed black screen. Gspot also informed me that there was no Audio Channel (I'm lost there?). Any help would be great, thanks.

  2. Maybe your AVI isn't an avi file at all.

Just because you have the codec, doesn't mean that any particular player will use it. Sounds wiered huh? It's quite true. I have some XviD I encoded I can't watch....go figure.....joys of codec hell, but I don't feel like re-installing W2K so I ceat.

Get the 4CC changer. Open the AVI and see what it says. There are a good dozen settings for 'divx', some work and some don't, but each setting is linked to a specific codec.

Try changing the 4CC to divx/divx and see if it plays okay now. This is a great cheat for any MPEG4 avi, especially some of the DivX 5 pro's that decided to use their own 4CC headers.
