  1. I just bought a Pioneer 106D last weekend and have had a lot of problems with it so far. The drive came with the 1.06 firmware.

I bought a few different kinds of media: TDK 2x DVD-R
(MXL RG01), Verbatim Data Life Plus 2.4x DVD+RW (MCC A01), Fuji 4x DVD-R (TYG01), and Fuji 2.4x DVD+RW (RICOHJPNW01). From what I have read these should all be top quality. I just did a fresh reinstall of windows, defragged all my drives and never do anything else on my PC while burning.

I have been using Nero Ultra 6.0.0.19 for most of my burning. The first 2 DVD-R's I burned (ISO backups of digicam pics onto TDK media at 2x) seemed to burn fine without problems but both failed the data verification in Nero due to some files being unreadable. I checked outside of Nero and most of the files it listed were not readable. The number of bad files was around 20 out of the 3000 on the DVD and they were all in the same directory or a near directory (alphabetically anyway. I also burned an MDS/MDF image using Alcohol 120% and it seemed to burn fine but I have similar problems where there are files on it that are not readable. There doesn't seem to be a data verification option in Alcohol 120% so I could only tell that some files were not readable.

I also burned some tests onto the Verbatim DVD+RW and Fuji+RW media and they seem to pass validation about 60% of the time but not the rest.

I made backups of a couple of my kids DVD movies and 1 of them failed validation in Nero but seems to play fine both on my PC and in my TV DVD player.

I have also tried using CopyToDVD and it seemed to work fine but I tried the trial version of Gear Pro 6.05 but I had the same kinds of problems with it too. I don't want to have to worry about backing stuff up from my hard drive and wondering if the DVD will work or not before I can delete the files. The drive came with the 1.06 firmware. I updated it to 1.07 but still have the same problems. I also reinstalled win2k after I had the problems initially but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

    My system specs are:

Intel P3 667 with 384MB RAM and VIA chipset based Asus MB
Windows 2000 SP4 with all the latest updates

Has anyone had similar problems with the A06/106D?

    Thanks,

    -Darryl

  2. Nero 6 needs lots of patches to work, did you get them?

  3. Looking at the Nero webpage I think 6.0.0.19 is the latest version of Nero. Are there some other patches needed?

My problem doesn't seem to be just with Nero though. I had problems with Alcohol 120% and Gear as well.

    Thanks for your help,

    -Darryl

  5. Make sure your drive is master, plus check to seee if your using Ultra DMA Mode 2. It might be on PIO Mode if that doesn't work exchange it for a new one.

  6. Hi,

Not sure if this is the same case as yours. I used Nero at one stage for burning a data-dvd but realised later that Nero was not correctly determining the space required for the set of files I had selected (over 4000 files). What I mean by this, is that it turned out that the space needed for the number of files to burn exceeded what would fit on DVDR but Nero reported that it would fit comfortably - so Nero did burn all the way through but when it verified the files, it found several bad files. I had only realised this after I used RecordNow Max which correctly reported that the number of files I had selected for burnning exceeded the capacity of the DVDR. At that stage, I was using Nero 5.5.etc so this may have been fixed in one of its many many many updates. Also please note that in this particular case, like yours, there were a lot of small files used.

    Good luck,
    feeras

  7. Thanks for all the ideas guys. My writer is set to master. I will try some more things out and if I continue to have problems I will try to get it exchanged for a new one.

I understand that Nero while great at regular CD burning, isn't so hot when burning DVD's.

Any chance you could put the drive into another computer?

  9. I have a pioneer A06 with firmware 1.05, and I have problems burn at 4x, but I think is it the media.

I burn used nero, clonedvd, copytodvd, and don't have problems burn at 1x. Then, I bought media genuine 4x (waiting receive) and try again burn at 4x.

You problem could be the firmware or the media.

    Try to use media genuine

Check if those problems are related to 2x media only. I have problems with all those 2x or 1x media. I have never had a problem with 4x media.
