There is no such thing as the ultimate all-in-one player. As much as I think that my Pioneer DV-434 is the best consumer-grade DVD player for under $200 ($149 at Costco), I realize that it is more accurately the best player based on my needs.

VCD, SVCD, SxVCD, etc. and of course DVD playback is superb. VCDs (from videotape source) play with just the slightest of artifacts visible. Playback of VCDs (of DVD rips) exhibit NO artifacts. These same discs show artifacts and pixelation on Apex players, Toshiba, and Sony (for those Sony models that would play them at all).

The Pioneers don't play MP3 discs, aren't upgradeable, aren't easily hackable. If these things are important to you then the Pioneer won't satisfy you.

Do you really want to know what the ultimate all-in-one DVD player is? Post your top 3 priorities/requirements in a DVD player and I'm sure that we can offer suggestions as to a player that will be YOUR ultimate player.

  5. I disagree, pioneer no MP3 at all, and my Toshiba 2050 plays VCD with ZERO artifacts and the BEST DVD I have ever seen and thats using my 36in monitor to compare with.
My APEX 660 is very very easy to hack, pop in a CD-R with the free hack upgrade found on the internet and 30 seconds later I have a macrovison free DVD player, no chip mod required.
I do not like the artifacts you get while playing DVD's, but with my own SVCD's and XVCD's I get no artifacts at all, I do beleive my Toshiba plays my XVCD's with a sharper and cleaner picture over the APEX 660, and heck I got my Toshiba at Sam's club 2 months ago for $67. He he, what a deal.

Most Pioneer products are very reputable. I have a DV-525 and its superb, no problems to date and very good quality at the price (at the time).
They are amongst the best players that you can buy.
