  1. I just upgraded my OS from Win98 to Win2k Pro, which is just as stable as Win XP, but less demanding on resources, as many of you pointed out. After installing all necessary new drivers, I started capturing with VirtualDub again. It just shocked me to see frames are dropping like leafs in the fall. I usually capture 1/2 D1 at 29.97 fps with Huffy, which has not been a problem under Win98. The CPU usage is about the same under Win2k Pro, but VDub just drops frames like crazy. I defragged capture drive and set DMA on, but nothing worked. It even dropped a large number of frames when I tried PicVideo MJPG at 320x240 with Q=18, which was totally insane! I was totally stumped.

As my last resort, I gave AVI_IO , which I haven't used for a long time., a try. Complete success! No frame dropped for about one hour capture, with Huff at 1/2 D1. What's going on here? Does AVI_IO use a different dropped frame counter? Did I misset some settings with VDub? There shouldn't be such dramatic differences.....

  2. Did you remember to change the framerate from the standard 15fps (vdubs default) to 25fps(PAL) or 29.97fps(NTSC). If it is set at 15fps you will drop loads of frames.

VDUB uses VFW drivers....something 95/98 supported. Everything else uses WDM drives...something 98/W2K/XP support better. You need the WDM wrapper to get it to do anything in high res. Try about anything else to capture with, VDUB jsut isnt' that good at it.

As a side note: Upgrades never work. A Fresh install of W2K will eliminate hundreds of issues you may or may not know you are having.

Also, a lot of programs install themselves differently between 9x and W2K/XP.
