  1. Just curious what brands/models of hardware everyone prefers. I am thinking of upgrading my computer with a Shuttle mb. Specifically, I would like to know about motherboards and hard drives, but be sure to includes DVD burners, etc. And be sure to include brands that suck for using with digital video. Thanks.

    Whatever is on sale

Both of my external HDs have been Maxtors, because they were cheap, and they work perfectly.

You wouldn't be interested in my internal stuff because I have an Apple computer.

  3. I use Epox for motherboards, after being recommended to them by Sefy a couple of years back. Have bought about 6 since then all been great. Only problem I had was plastic lug snapped of one of the cpu sockets after installing a Zalman flower (really heavy heatsink) but that is the heatsinks fault not the motherboard. Would reccomend Sony or Pioneer for DVD burners although if their CD drives and DVD roms are anything to go by lite-on may well be worth a look. Not much in hard drives really but if given the choice I would plump for a Western Digital.

  4. I like Giga-Byte MB, and use Western Digital Hard drives. Corsair RAM, and ATI video cards

I've built three computers with Asus boards so far and no one's complained. Two are for "average" users. The third is my personal computer, which is pretty much in internet box, unless I'm in the process of capturing and encoding something.

I prefer AMD chips, out of habit.

For cd burning optical drives, I like Plextor. They're expensive, but quieter than the lite-on drives that I've used.

I try to stick to brand name RAM. Although I've never used any, I just don't trust those really cheap bargain deals. So far, I've used Crucial, Kingston, and Corsair.

If you're looking for a single AMD board a friend of mine got an Asus A7N8X deluxe which seems to be a really nice board with tons of built-in features for around $100. Most hard drives out there are good, Maxtor and WD being the most common and pretty much equal. Seagate makes good drives as well. Branded RAM is a good bet, though I've had some issues with Crucial not playing well with others. I buy Mushkin, but Kingston has worked well for me in the past.

I'll go with the Maxtor reccomendations - I have 4 or 5 of them and they are all working quite well.

Asus & Biostar mobos, AMD processors, HP printers, Plextor burners if I can afford them. and I have a pair of Compaq monitors on my desk that are pretty nice, even though I got them second-hand.

Belkin USB hubs, cables & KVM switches. Logitech optical mice.

and the Krister computer desk from Ikea - best $30 I've spent on a computer accessory.

One reason why I stick with Maxtor for hard drives, is their warranty policy. One of my 30Gig drives broke down about a year or two ago and replacing it was very easy. The most trouble I had was explaining to the tech on the phone that the drive was too shot to diagnose. He asked me about three times if I tried running their PowerMax software and I replied three times that the drive wouldn't even power on. He finally just gave me the RMA and told me to be sure to use the PowerMax software, next time. Right.

Anyway, the rest of the process went well. I got my replacement drive withing a week. The best thing is, they must have been out of 30Gig replacements, because they sent me a 40Gig drive instead.

  10. Personaly i'd stick to EPoX mainboards, they have great support and awsome stability, and like their nForce2 board comes with Dual VGA and that's the only board which has that.

As for HDD, only Western Digital with the 8mb Cache, it comes with 3 years warranty and they are very cheap these days. I Personaly wouldn't use Maxtor even if it was given to me by a present, i'd maximum use it as a door stop or something to drop on heads of thiefes.
