  1. I have a 734MB MPEG that I would like to burn onto a 700MB disc. I've read about being able to overburn, but what exactly is the most I'd be able to fit on a 700MB disc? Oh yeah - I'm using Nero. Thnx.

Vcds are not burnt like regular data. They are burnt in mode 2 which means that a regular cdr holds 740MB's and an 80 min cdr holds 800 MB's. You do not need to overburn that mpg, it will just fit on a regular cdr. Just burn it using the vcd function in nero.

When you actually do have to overburn you can theoretically fit just under 40MB's of extra data onto any size cdr, but the actual amount you can fit can be more or less depending on the brand of cdr and your burner.

  3. You don't need to overburn. If you want to know the real capacity of CD-R's check:

  4. Um, is it just me, or does it feel like this question gets asked everyday??
perhaps next time try using the SEARCH function in the forum.

  5. Um,.. I did try the SEARCH function Smig, and couldn't find a post that had anything about the EXACT amount that a person could put on a disc. I'm sure there probably is a post somewheres, I just didn't see it. Sorry if I wasted your all so precious time...

But thanks Peter and adam for your replies, it's just what I was looking for!

    Cheers

  6. VCDs and SVCDs are burnt in MODE2 Form2 which is somewhat analogous to the way audio tracks are burnt on a CD, i.e., they don't contain the additional error correction codes (ECC) found in normal data CD-ROMs.

The total capacity of a 74min CD is about 747MB and that of an 80min CD is about 807MB. The normally stated data capacities of CD-ROMs of 650MB and 700MB is because part of the total capacity is taken up by ECC. As S/VCD don't use ECC, the total space available for user data approaches that of the total capacity of the disc.

To convince yourself of the total capacity of a CD, get an audio CD that is near full capcity (e.g., 74min long). Then, rip the entire disc to uncompressed WAV. If you look at the total size of the wave files, it should be approx. 740MB.

In summary (as what others have stated), you can fit the following on S/VCD WITHOUT overburning:
    - ~740MB on 74min/650MB media
    - ~800MB on 80min/700MB media
