  1. Hello folks,

Hopefully, someone has the answer to this odd situation.

I have a Pioneer DVD-R AO5 and I was using Nero (5.x and early 6.x) to burn DVD videos that played fine on set top DVD players. Then I upgrade to Nero 6.0.0.19 and when I burn a DVD video disc, the resulting disc is unplayable on set tops but it plays fine in DVD-ROM drives in a PC through WinDVD or PowerDVD. Also, on PC's, I can read the DVD's directory just fine.

The ONLY problem I have with these disc in a DVD-R or DVD-ROM player in a PC (I have both types of drives) is that DVDshrink (2.3) won't "OPEN" the burnt DVD anymore. It comes up with some COMPLETELY vague error (along the lines of "Can't open because of unknown problem". Very specific if you can see.) But like I said before, it plays fine and DVD Decrypter reads the DVD just fine. I've even "rebackedup" the movie from the "bad" disc using DVD Decrypter and reburnt it (after the "semi-fix" I did below) and it worked fine. Very odd.

I have since uninstalled Nero 6.0.0.19 (using XP's add/remove) and went back to 6.0.0.11 and now I can burn DVD's just fine but another problem has come up.

I have a stack of Verbatim 2x DVD-R's and they used to burn at 2X starting from Nero v5.x...NOW, since I've gone back to 6.0.0.11, the same media (from the same cakebox) only burns at 1x. These DVD-R'sNEVER burned at 1x, it was always at 2x.

What gives? You think it might be something fishy with the OS (WinXP SP1 with all the current updates) or the DVD-R drive or Nero? I can't really figure out what the heck is going on (hence my handle!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot guys!

  2. Add/Remove doesn't always remove all the files/Reg entries of a program and Nero is a fairly complicated install. Not all install programs do well when changing versions back and forth either. If you had a 'windows cleaner' program that would moniter the install then you could completely remove the application, but then again, if the installed program overwrites system files this also becomes a touchy subject. It's always best to have a way of 'going back' to a point in time that the system worked to your liking. System Restore may do this for you but the best is to have hard drive images. I've seen System Restore fail to correct problems.

You problem sounds to me like 'program preferences'. Are you certain you have Nero setup correctly? Do you have access to a different system to try those disks on? DVD-R blanks - right?

    Good luck.

  3. BN, thanks for the reply,

Well the problem didn't start until I upgrade to 19. When I was running version 11 previously, everything worked fine which of course leads me to believe that v6.0.0.19 is the problem but it's such an odd problem.

I have the preferences set up exactly as it always has been. I have access to several different brand/model DVD players from $49 ones to $499+ ones....and yes, they are blank DVD-R disks. Hehehe, I'm not a computer newbie, I've been computing this since the Timex/Sinclair 1000 was all the rage (bet few of you guys were even old enough to know what the hell that is!) and there was no such thing as HTML, it was all text and 300 baud! Ah, the good ol' days...actually, those days sucked compared to cable modem and a P4!

Another issue, probably related, that has come up is that Nero just straight out crashes (more like automatic alt-F4) when I try to change the YEAR in any of the date related options under properties (like what date to set as creation date, modified date, expiration date, etc., etc...) Another thing it has NEVER done.

I don't get it, it's like Nero has gone berzerk lately....

Any other clues? How can I COMPLETELY uninstall Nero...am I going to have to through the registery and find and delete every single Nero related item? I've already done a complete uninstall (the entire Ahead folder was gone)...

  4. Better yet, screw Nero, is there a better DVD Video burning program? I have the newest version of Roxio's stuff (my buddy works there) but I'm not a big fan of their software (don't like the "Interface for Dummies" interface)...I want something mean that can just burn a DVD video without a hickup!

  5. My first online session was at 1200baud from AOL on a 486 SX33 with 4mb of ram running DoubleSpace, so I'm just a youngster. haha

I don't like Nero and never have. I've tried several versions and the newest version, 6 I guess, is the worst. It's complicated, hard to learn, cluttered, overbearing, easy to mess up, etc. I can do just as good with a plain old burning program like RecordNow DX. I don't need all that fancy stuff Nero offers.

Remove Nero! I think it's easier to just leave it on there.... lol

    Good luck.
