  1. I read a Chinese web page http://www.yesky.com/SoftChannel/72351180872744960/20030324/1658782.shtml on making “Mini DVD” on a SVCD format. I followed the steps but the SVCD only plays from my PC (with Intervideo WINDVD player) but not play from my DVD player (that won’t play DVD-R or DVD-RW.) The TV screen comes out with large color blocks but the sound seems ok.
Here are the steps in the web page:
    1. Capture the AVI file at 720x578
    2. Import the AVI file to TMPGEnc Plus.
    3. Open the template DVD(PAL).mcf then also open the /Template/Extra/unlock.mcf so that you can overwrite the DVD(PAL).mcf settings.
    4. Change the Rate Control Mode to CBR and Bitrate to 4000kbits/sec
    5. Tick the DeInterlace box in Advance setting.
    6. Start converting in TMPGEnc Plus.
    7. Process the resulted mpg file with M2-EDIT PRO:
    8. In M2-EDIT PRO/Navigator/File/open/mpeg, type in the mpg filename
    9. In M2-EDIT PRO/Composer/Edit/Insert, type in the mpg filename.
    10. In M2-EDIT PRO/Composer/File/Generate/Sector Size change to 2304.
    11. OK to start process the file in M2-EDIT PRO.
    12. Burn the resulted mpg file with Nero Burning Rom:
    13. Select Make SVCD in Nero Burning Rom and UN-TICK the “Create Standard Compliant CD”.

    My questions is :
    1. Is it possible to create DVD resolution on SVCD by changing the above parameters?
    2. What is the M2-EDIT PRO/Composer/File/Generate/Sector Size change to 2304 doing here?
    3. Is there any thing I can change to make this work (of course I want to keep the 720x578 resolution and play it on a normal DVD player).
    4. Do I need a special DVD player to play this SVCD like the one that can play the “real” Mini DVD created by Nero?

    Thanks.

You can make a 352x480 Half-D1 DVD-compliant video and it will create a CVD (SVCD variant).

I always used 720x480 to create SVCD,it worked on all the DVD players i;ve tested and should work on any DVD player that suppports SVCD.
Given the high pixel count I wouldn't go below 2200 average bitrate.
I'm using DVD2ONE to create SVCD and that preserves the 720x480.
