  1. Hi everyone

I spent quite a few hours the other day trying to convert a VOB file I had ripped with DVD Decrypter to a high quality MPEG2 file and couldn't do it. I tried nearly every program I have downloaded and read lots of help files without any success. I gave up the idea.

Today I spent 3 minutes on the Internet and found the answer to my question.

"Simply rename the file from .VOB to .MPG" Isn't that the pits.... lol

  2. Rename the file extension is not a good way. Each VOB consists of some headers etc which are not necessary for MPEG2.

Use Vobedit. (Search this forum for this program)

    1. Start vobedit, click open, browse to 'VTS_01_0.VOB' in the 'VIDEO_TS' folder of your DVD. (better rip the VOB to the HDD first)
    2. Click 'demux', a small window opens, select 'demux all video stream', 'demux all audio streams', cllck 'OK'. (Selection depends on your own choice)

A m2v video stream and mpa audio stream(s) will be produced by vobedit. Multiplex them by TMPGEnc or else to a single Mpeg2 file.

Sometimes just renaming the vob to an mpg can cause problems. I use Smart Ripper. Under the Movie tab there is a stream processing option. This will allow you to rip several different ways:

    1. It can create 1 large vob file
    2. It can split the audio and video into there elementary streams (m2p, ac3, dts, ect).
    3. It also can rip out one of the streams and create a vob out of the other.

Next highlight the video source --> select the the process choice. Then do the same for the audio.

-Direct Stream Copy will create a 1 large vob.
-Demux to extra file will create the elementary stream.

Finaly you need to re-multiplex the two togeather again. You can use a number of programs for this. I use TMPGEnc. Good Luck!!!

Vobedit found and processed my vob file like you said, but Tmpgenc won't open the 'm2v' file. I've got the newest version available (2.5). None of my other programs will open the file either.

Smart Ripper won't recognize my loly vob file on my hard drive. I suppose I could use that program to rip it from the DVD again, but as a stand alone loly vob file it won't 'see' it.

    Now what?

ReJig will demux a (series of) VOB(s) to M2V, and even compress (like DVD Shrink) if you want it to.

I tried the rename vob to mpg trick once, as a test. It corrupted the entire Video_TS folder - renamed all files and made it extremely difficult to reconstruct. Might have been a unique situation. Many others never had that happen.

I'd say - just in case - always work with a copy in its own folder - if you're going to try it.

  7. Not too OT, but I find it odd that Vegas Video doesn't accept M2V files, but it accepts VOBs... It also takes in the audio from the VOB if its PCM or MP2 Audio, but won't take AC3.

Use MPEG2VCR to highlight the entire VOB, then SAVE AS using a new nam and don't touch the AUDIO OR VIDEO pages (no stream adjustments) and it'll CREATE an .MPG right from the VOB with the same characteristics....even keep the AC3 onboard...!

  9. I've been able to convert my loly vob file to mpeg2 with whatever framesize and bitrate I want using DVD to DIVX and choosing 'MPEG2' in the output settings, but it's pretty slow (about +-10fps). The quality is good and the audio is in sync, but it sure is slow going.

You were right about just renaming the vob to mpg, thats not a good idea. The file would play, but it's got problems. None of my programs could do anything with the vob/mpg renamed file.

    Thanks guys.

A .VOB file is (usually) just an .M2V video ES and an audio ES and a navigation padding stream. It is a simple matter to just demux the .VOB into these elementry streams. Once done, use a MUXING program to mux the video and the audio ESs together and "viola", you have your .MPG stream.

Smartripper will do this for you, even on a DVD already ripped to HD.

Renaming to MPG doesn't ever work. It's not an MPG, it's more like a ZIP. What your player is doing is ignoring the extension and reading the header(sees a VOB and goes from there, knows that's it's an m2v and some audio stream, generally taking the 'first' one). That's how .divx files play when they are really OGG packages. This doens't always work, but a file/open will usually do the trick if it can be done (no messy file asociation errors).

Use Vobedit to demux, then use dvd2avi to write a d2v to open the m2v stream

Load the d2v via avisynth and CCE or load it directly into TMPG as your video source

  13. Loading the m2v file into TMPGenc is no problem, I just can't get the program to except the ac3 file. It says it's not supported, but it will convert using AC3Decoder into a wav file, but that isn't excepted either.

Again, DVD to DIVX with an output to mpeg2 has been my only successful option so far.

It won't accept ac3 in the encoding mode. However, you are trying to multiplex not re-encode. The multiplex tool is under: File--> MPEG Tools. TMPGEnc will multiplex an m2v and ac3 no problem, these extensions are even in the scroll down when you select a file.

  15. which setting do you choose to multiplex the files? I'm doing the same thing trying to fix a glitchy DVD but the audio is way out of sinc in the resulting MPG file.

  16. Update:

I delete my loly vob file and ripped it again off the original disk. This time around TMPGenc Plus (using MPEG TOOLS again) let me De-Multiplex the vob (*.*) and produced the m2v and ac3 files like it was supposed to. I suppose my vob file was damaged. I reencoded the ac3 to mp2 with HeadAC3he v0.23a, then Multiplex to MPEG2 Program VBR. Pretty easy this time(?)

Thanks for the help everyone. I've got it going now I think.
