  1. hello

I have an All in wonder 9800 card. I capture with the Ati multimedia center because I find it's quite easy to use. ( I capture my Hi8 and 8mm tapes)

I want to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit my captured Avi Files but when I start the program, there are no presets for Windows Video. there's only DV settings...

Now I want to make one but I can't get it figured out for the frame size.
My captured files are all 384x315.

should I use that ? or should I capture again with another video size and then use that same size for the editing...

    Hope I'm a little clear...

note I use PAL not NTSC

    couple of questions -

is 384x315 a standard size for something, or arbitrary?

what is your desired output format?

are you having problems getting Premiere to recognize your footage?

  3. no it's just the setting the software seems to capture it to...

I used the "quarter VGA resolution" : normal resolution recording (with UYVY and 44.100 khz 16 bit sound)

it's one of the preset of the capture card...

    Premiere uses it fine...
but if that's not a really desirable resolution, I'm not going to continue my work with it...

my desired output format.... mhhh either first edit my tapes and then making a VCD or DVD out of them...

    thanx

    greets

I would capture at the final output resolution, so if you're going for dvd, cap at dvd resolution, if you're going for vcd, cap at vcd res... or at least a valid resolution for the format (like 1/2 D1 for DVD).

as far as the templates in Adobe, if you can't make a new one yourself, I'd take whichever one it defaults to - you're going to be exporting out of it anyway to your final file format, so I don't think it's going to mess you up in any way to work in project settings that may not be 100% what you want.

if you're not having problems opening up your files, I'd do a really small file and render it out and make sure the quality is where you want it.

  6. indeed capturing from premiere does some weird things...

that's why I capture first with the ati software
and then import the file in premiere.

I guess I'm going to capture the file again in Dvd resolution.
If I still plan to burn it on vcd I can still resize right ? (I think resizing to a smaller size is better than resizing to a bigger resolution, right ?)

Secondly, now that I'm having problems :

I use pinnacle already and it was quite easy to make scenes out of one big long video file (thus making editing easier)
this seems to be a bit more difficult in premiere, I always have to cut the whole file to the section I want and for the next scene I need to import the whole file again and cut it again...
this can't be right, there must be a way to do this better....

thanx anyway for the replies, now I already have an idea to what resolution to capture.

  7. I don't get it

the highest I can capture to with the ATi sofware is 704x576

    I can't select 720 x 576
    neither can I 352 x 288

as I read on lordsmurf his site YUY2 seems better than UYVY but that makes too hugue file for my disc...

  8. Ok I can choose 720 x 576 if I select capturing in MPEG2

but I read that AVI was better if i need to edit the file a lot.

    so is 704x576 a correct resolution ?

That is a Valid DVD resolution and some people say it is a better res to use when resizing down to 1/2 D1 (352*576) or VCD (325 * 288) as it is exactly half (or twice!) the size compared to 720*576.
