I'm pulling my hair out here. I've been told too many different things and have read too many different things out there about DVD+RW for PS2. YOU EITHER CAN OR CANNOT.... Modchips: Magic 3.1, Messaiha(sp?), DMS3, etc.... I don't care which one can or will do the trick... all I want to know is if there IS a modchip out there for the PS2 that can be installed in my v7 PS2 that will allow me to play DVD+RW video games? I have an HP 100i that will only burn to DVD+RW media... (I guess you get what you pay for, got it of ebay for 50 bucks.) It does what it's supposed to, and I use Verbatim's DVD+RW media, but before I invest in a modchip, I want to know if I'm going to be able to REALLY please DVD+RW games on my PS2. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW FOR A CERTAIN FACT THAT YOU CAN PLAY DVD+RW GAMES ON THE PS2 WITH A MODCHIP? ANY MODCHIP WILL DO... I DON'T CARE. PLEASE... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SOMEONE JUST PRETTY PLEASE WITH CHERRIES ON TOP, TELL ME!!!

There are no absolutes but basically if you have a PS2 version 1-4 You can be 90% sure that it wont read DVD+RW and you can be sure that there is about a 24-40% it will read DVD+R
IF you have good media there is about a 98% it will read DVDV-R
and 50% chance it will read DVD-RW
IF you have a version 5 or higher you have about a 70%+ chance of being able to read DVD+R and about 65%+ or greater chance of reading DVD+RW
IF you have good media there is about a 98% it will read DVD-R
and 70% chance it will read DVD-RW
If you have a version 9 it will read +/- with no problem (at least that is what they say havent got one yet to test it out)
Click here to determine your ps2 version
Version 9 is a SCPH 50001
Also check to see if there is a firmaware upgrade so you can burn dvd+R also I think that there is one out there -
Sorry man I think you are SOL
I saw that they never came out with the firmware flash for it they just offered people the ability to repalce that drive for the 200 that has +r support instead for $99
Sorry -

If you had a different DVD burner you can be 100% sure that it will work
I would definitely say that most of the version 7's would probably read +R
I would say that ~60-70% would read +RW
Since the laser are adjust to play original games and they are set to fit within a certain tolerence level there is a varying range on laser strength so some can read +RW and some can't. The bottom line would be is you have to try it and see.
If you know someone with some swapmagic disks you can take your ps2 cover of and the dvd tray cover and test it out by using the swap magci disk to boot then that way you would know for certain that it would work before you bought a chip.
Or
You could just use a flip-top,knife swap, or no solder mod with the swap magic disks and not worry about a chip at all.
I highly recommend a chip but if you dont mind swapping games then these disks might be for you.
Also the current swap magic disk wont play around 20 games but there is supposed to be a new one comming out soon to solve these problems also
(I still say geta chip)
The choice is yours and best of success on your choice
Lemme know if you need to find a chip installer
