  1. Hi all,

I am totally new to DVD burning, so please bear with me. I just bought a NEC ND-1300A bulk. I have a 2GHz Windows XP machine. When I just plug in the internal DVD writer, and boot up, the popup window says it has identified the new hardware, and asks me to reboot. Once I do that I see the PC sees it as a NEC ND-1100A, and not a NEC ND-1300A, i.e. it recognizes it to be a NEC drive, but not the correct model. The green light in the drive just keeps blinking, and I cannot open the drive.

Looks like I need to upgrade the firmware, right? I tried to download the 1.08 version, but could not install it.

    Please help......

    Thanks

  2. I assume when you installed the drive on IDE1 or IDE2 you set the jumper on the NEC drive to primary or slave and then connected the cable to IDE1 if it's a slave or IDE2 as the primary.

Anyway try this, in widows device manager remove the drive and shut down the computer. Confirm the drive jumpers are correct then re-boot. Now back in device manager under IDE controllers (not drives) confirm that DMA is enabled on the drive. If the drive still shows up as a 1100a perhaps you should return the drive as it should still work or be able to read a disc IMO. Also I would do any windows updates or service packs if available.

What does it say on the drive's cover, what model? R U sure it's 1300A?
You may need to download and install WinXP updates or so too.

  4. When it's installed correctly, it should (most likely) read as "_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A."

  5. We just installed a Nec1300A a week ago.

    Win2000, Nero6, Adaptec ASPI
Secondary master, updated the 1.05 to 1.08 autoreset firmware (downloaded from Herrie's site)
    Went without a hitch

  7. Nope, for a friend.

BTW I like the Nec1300A, I might get one for myself too

  8. Hi BobW,

When I go to the device manager, I see (1) Intel ATA controller (2)Primary IDE controller and (3) Secondary IDE controller, how do I check whether the DMA is enabled or not. Everything should be fine, since, I just replaced my existing Sony CD writer (which worked great till date) with this DVD writer, and as the CD-writer it is set to slave. this one is also set to slave.

In my driver info it says "_NECDVD_RW ND-1100A", although my drive is clearly a ND-1300A (I checked again).

I took the XP update, rebooted the machine, but the green light is just keep blinking, and I cannot open the drive, let alone use it.

    Please help.....

    Thanks

  9. Right click on either the primary or secondary IDE in device manager then select "properties", then select "advanced settings" and from there you will see if DNA is enabled or not. The fact that the drive light just stays on is a symptom of either the drive jumpers set wrong or perhaps having two drives on an IDE both set to primary or slave IMO. I would put the drive on the secondary IDE as the primary and for test reasons remove any other devices on that IDE to be sure there is no conflicts.

  10. Hi BobW,

I did exactly as you suggested, i.e. made the DVD writer (changed the jumper setting) as the master drive and removed the other drive, to avoid any confusion, but the same problem, it still says it to be ND-1100A, and the same light blinking. Is it possible, that the PC just does not have any ND-1400A driver installed at all, and thus does not find any? Is there any way to force update the PC with the ND-1300A firmware. I tried to make the machine take a 1.08 update (for ND-1300A), but of course it did not even understand the earlier version.

Again as I said my machine is a Dell windows XP and my DVD writer that I got is a NEC ND-1300A (bulk without any software).

    Thanks for all your help.

  11. Well be sure to first remove the drive in windows device manager first then re-boot and let windows find it again. There is no other reason short of a windows problem that the drive shouldn't work and if not then it may just be a defective drive.

  13. Hi guys,

Still no luck. I took all the XP updates, uninstalled the Device driver, then rebooted, but still says it is NEC ND-1100A driver, whereas mine is a ND-1300A

Also removed the other DVD ROM drive and did set the ND-1300A drive as the master drive, and checked it, everything looks fine, but the green light keeps blinking, and the drive is unusable (cannot open it, or do anything).

    Please help......

For whatever reason, I think the drive you got was erroneously flashed to a version of the ND-1100A firmware, and that's why the light is blinking. If you are not good at firmware flashing under the real DOS mode, then exchange it for another drive immediately. If you want to try something before returning it, then you should download a DOS flasher version of the ND-1300A firmware from Herrie's website:

    http://herrie.rpc1.org/

and flash it in the real DOS mode. If the drive is still fine, then flashing it under the real DOS mode should bring it back to normal condition. Read the 'How to flash" section below FAQ if necessary.

    Good luck.

According to Herrie the Nec1300 should work well as a DVD+RW/R burner if flashed with Nec1100 firmware.

If yours doesn't work at all (cant open the tray, blinking led) forget about flashing, exchange the drive.

  16. Just curious, but whenever I've installed a new CD/DVD/DVDR I've never seen a 'pop-up' telling me windows has found new hardware.

Have been for the last 3 months and haven't seen it for 'CD' drives but have for printers and memory card readers.

Where can I get the official 1.08 firmware?

I'm not too keen on hacked firmwares.

    udayan,

I had the same problem with my NEC 1300A drive. Flashing light and locked unit! This happened after I tried to upgrade the firmware using the official Windows flasher. I thought I had trashed the drive but to my relief it worked after I re-flashed using the DOS flasher, either the NEC or Herrie one. I copied the flasher files to a directory on my c drive then booted to DOS using a floppy (make sure your AUTOEXE is blank), then headed to the c drive and ran the flasher as detailed on Herrie's site. This revived my drive, I flashed the unit a number of times with different firmwares - I'm now using the official 1.08.

Is anyone having problems with NERO and NEC 1300A writing to CR-R/W's? NERO keeps saying "This disc is not writable", I have tried everything, I'm using Sony CDRs, I know they work with Clone CD but NERO refuses to write. I have latest version 6.0.0.19. No problems with DVD writing.

    Any help welcome.

  25. Udayan, you better tell us where you bought your drive from so we all know the scammers. Basically they sold you returned used wrongly reflashed drive and you paid for brand new. I would request my money back including shipping. Did you buy it from tigerdirect?
