  1. I just got a G5 and with the new addition of optical in/out ports on the back I decided to make my computer my new DVD/(S)VCD/DivX player. Some of the DivX rips that I have been getting off the internet have the full 5.1 AC3 track embedded within it and I just want to know if it is currently possible for me to play it back out in it's six channel glory through my sound system.

My reciever has all the good stuff, decoders and whatnot, and it will play DVDs in DVD Player just fine in surround sound. But when I play a DivX (in VLC and Quicktime) it just shows up as 44.1khz stereo!

Is there a way to do this right now (without demultiplexing, yada yada) with just one app or will it be on the backburner until the whole optical out thing catches on?

  3. Hmm, well, I don't want to get an extra card seeing as how the optical out should be the best option.

I assume that your friend has six speakers running to the card, meaning that there are six separate sets of wires running to the back of his computer. If this is the case the I believe I know which card he has.

But if he is infact using optical out then please do speak with him!

(If he has a G5 then that is probably what he is doing.)
