Looking at the price list at Big Ben Computers in Sydney Australia, I notice that you can purchase a 50 disk spindle of 90min CD's for $18.

I was wondering what are the limitations of using 90min CD's vs the 80min CD's. Say for example that only 80min was used, would this disk work in a device that didn't accept 90min disks. At $18, there is no need to muck around with different recording lenghts as the blank cost is no different.

Reading elswhere, it appears that 90min CD's will work in most recent computer drives, but it is unclear what happens DVD and audio players.

I've used 99 minute CDR's in several different computers and 4 standalone DVD players. I doubt you will expierence any compatability problems. Your CDR recorder and your burning software must provide overburning options to use 90/99 minute CDR's.

  3. Some DVD players are picky with CD-R's, but the issue here is how much narrower the track pitch is on higher capacity discs.

Some players may find overburning a problem and start having problems near the edge as it can't track the data correctly - especially portable devices or players in cars for example, where they are more likely to suffer tracking errors.

Unless you obsolutely need a few extra minutes or Meg of data, I always advise people stick with 80 minute discs as the maximum if they want to go for the best cross platform compatibility.

Thanks, is the extra 10 minutes on the outside and therefor if not used, ie only 80min used, then there is no difference between a 90min and 80min?
