  1. Let's say I want to encode a movie that has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 to anamorphic widescreen.

I open TMPEG and I choose NTSC (16:9) DVD. Then I keep the video arrange method at Full Screen. I've tried all the other methods and still no luck. I must be doing something wrong here somewhere.

I encode the video. All is well until I watch it. The final result is that the movie is now shown in a 16:9 aspect when I have my DVD settings at 4:3 letterbox (which is default) and THEN when I switch my DVD player settings to 16:9 it fills the screen.

I don't mind filling the screen when I switch the setting to 16:9 but what I want to be able to do is encode the movie as anamorphic and have it shown at its ORIGINAL aspect ratio (2.35:1) when I DON'T have the 16:9 setting on. Then when I switch it to 16:9 I want it to fill the screen or expand to 16:9 or whatever just like on official movie DVDs. My problem here is that the movie is 16:9 when the 4:3 letterbox setting is on. I don't want that, I want it to be shown at its original aspect (which is a little thinner vertically) when I have it set at 4:3 letterbox on my DVD player.

Take Matrix for example. You pop it in, it's 2.35:1. You switch the settings to show 16:9 and the picture expands. THAT is what I want to be able to do. I don't want it to ALREADY be shown as 16:9 when I have 4:3 setting on. See what I'm saying? Is it possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  2. well, you don't want to use the video arrange method "full screen", for a start. use one of the "keep aspect ratio" arrange methods.

The original source that is 2.35:1 is already anamorphic or is it 4:3 widescreen?

Makes a difference as to how you process it.

Also what is the source? Is it a DivX/Xvid that has the black already chopped off or is the black still there?

There is no one simple answer here ... until we know more about the source.

  4. The source is a MOV file that is already chopped and in widescreen, not anamorphic. They are Matrix trailers from the official site. I'm making a DVD with every trailer from all the movies and I want them to be anamorphic.

Well in that case I think you will get the desired effect properly if you do the following:

Use the 16x9 NTSC DVD Template
Select the MOV ... aspect ratio should auto to VGA 1:1
Use FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO) or FULL SCREEN (KEEP ASPECT RATIO 2) ... my guess is both will have the exact same effect here.

    Anyway those settings SHOULD work.

    *** EDIT ***
Just wanted to add this ...
When you select the 16x9 NTSC DVD Template you are telling TMPGEnc to output in 16x9
When you import the MOV it should default to VGA 1:1 for the aspect ratio. This is the aspect ratio of the source ... not the output. For MOV the VGA 1:1 setting should work properly.

  6. Thanks FulciLives. I'm gonna try that out later on today. If I have any more problems I'll post them here.
