  1. My question is what do I need to make backup DVDr's of my dvd's that I own? Also do I need a DVD drive AND a DVD-RW drive or could I get buy with JUST a DVD-RW drive? Let me know, thanks.

  2. DVD drives will record to DVD-R and DVD-RW. So you need a DVD burner then the media for the burner then download the free program DVDshrink. To do the actual burn use RecordNow Max or Nero burning software which may come with the purchased DVD burner if you buy that retail.

    I'll help you out partner!

Look at the LEFT HAND side of your screen. See the GREEN TINTED section of the navigation bar entitled HOW TO?

    Good.

    Now read.

Good One. I suggested that someone might look into getting a new DVD Player on another thread, now I have a flame war going on with a Brit in the UK. He did take a large bite. it's like asking what do I need to build an addition on to my house.

  6. wow you people are rude, ALL I WANTED TO KNOW WAS DO I NEED A DVD drive AND a DVD-RW or could I just get by with a DVD-RW and NO Dvd drive??? Please just let me know and dont tell me to look in a guide because NO guide answers this question.

  7. Maybe I missed the rude part (edits/mods?) but you need a DVD-ROM drive to rip your DVDs to the HD and a DVDRW drive to burn them. You can use the DVD-RW drive to rip (it reads DVD-ROM and CD-ROM discs too). However, having a seperate DVD-ROM is nice:

    1) You can get an unlocked DVD-ROM drive. Most DVD-ROM and DVDRW drives are locked at 2x rip speed. That's a huge pain. Some drives are not, the Lite-on 166S is unlocked and a popular choice (~$30 at www.newegg.com)

    2) Less stress on your DVDRW drive. Although most modern drives can take it, people are still a little nervous about ripping for several hours on their expenisve ($120-250) DVD writors vs. the cheap $30 DVD-ROM drives

For me the main thing is the rip speed, you really want an unlocked drive if you plan to back up a lot of DVDs.

  8. Is the Sony 16x dvd-rom drive unlocked? Is their software that will unlock a drive? Also is the NEC-ND-1300A Dual Format DVD-RW drive unlocked and is it any good? I looked up some reviews of it and everyone loved it.

If you live in the US, go to Wally world and get a LiteOn for 42 bucks, its unlocked and will rip at 16x.

that and keep in mind that typically you get faster read speeds for the dvd out of standalone dvd-rom drives than you do out of your dvd-r/rw drive.

by nature, a dvd-r/rw drive is an all in one drive
    burns cds
    reads cds
    burns dvds
    reads dvds

you can get buy with just one, but typically (id say) most people have two. For example I have whats called a "combo" drive - reads/writes CD's and reads dvds
additionally I have a dvd-r/rw drive which does everything. its nice because i can do disk to disk copy without having to copy to the HD first, then burn the copy.

either way, these days, if you got a new dvd-r/rw drive it will suit you just fine.

    Sigh.

You only need the DVDRW drive. You can get a dual format ( burns anything on sale :P ) NEC 1300 for $120 delivered mail order. Whether or not your standalone player will support -R or +R you will have to determine yourself. Supporting RW is nice since you can test your encodes to make sure you did it right.

Now having said that.... Most DVDRW's and most DVDROMS will only rip at 2x. If you don't mind ripping for 1/2 hour instead of 5 minutes, it's a non-issue. Try the DVDRW first then if it's killing you waiting, then get the liteon that rips a lot faster.

The issue revolves around how many IDE slots you have left. I prefer 2 drives because I got an old used DVDROM for $5 that rips at 3x-9x, whereas my new one only ripps at 2x.

  13. you can get by with just a dvdrw drive

    1. computer for the DVDRW drive and room on the pc to put the drive in
    2. ripping and burning software - freeware-dvddecrypter,dvdshrink, and an app called dvdshrinkiso
    3. DVDr's

Should you go the dvdshrink and/or dvddecrpyer route, there are a few guides in the guides section that will walk you through how to back up your movies.

sorry, have to admit, i dont know why!

ive always assumed that the read speed of the drive for dvd is its ripping speed.

16x read to me implies a 16x rip

im not so sure why you are worrying about all this. I have a 16x read speed superdrive and it will pull about 8 gigs in 12-15 min.

if thats truly 2x then dont complain.

Apparently the people that wrote the firmware for the
DVD ROM drives got bribed or threatened with bodily harm
somehow to slow down the read speed when encrypted disks are detected.
I guess 16x doesn't count in that case.
"unlocked" must mean - created by people with a diminished
    respect for alleged authority .

I have an old DVD Rom - sometimes it goes like hell 7 -9 X
and sometimes it's 1.6 beats me.
