  1. Ok I didn't really eat it

Warning, Bug sprays like Raid can be hazzardist to your disks!
I live out in the country and have pets, like everyones my dog occasionally gets fleas! Not often, I keep him pretty clean and treated!

SO we got a couple fleas around my computer area where he likes to lay when I am working, so I grab some RAID spray flea killer and hit the carpet with it. All fine and dandy except my Warcraft backup CD is laying on the floor, record side up of course, back behind a box. Yep I coated it fairly well!

NIces little spots and fog all over it! Not sure what it did to the disk. It did not eat into the disk and make any pits, but it does not wash off either. I tried dish soap and someting else, but it is there!

So I grabbed the good old toothepaist! Put a nice dab on the disk and rubbed hard in a circle pattern (like some of those disk cleaniners do) with my finger for awhile. Washed it off reall well and dried good. Spots can still be seen (alot), but now it does play agian! Before with just a washing the disk could not be read at all.

So beware of spraying your disks for fleas!
And to repair a damaged CD/DVD toothpaist is not a mythe!
I think I did put some scratches on the disk though that were not there before, so use it wisely!

I do have the original disk, so I could easily make a new 20 cent backup, but wanted to see for the heck of it if I can fix this one. It does play now, looks bad though. Next I'll run it through a Dr. disk fixer when I get one.

    Silly as usual

It is serious. I learned LONG ago .
I set off a bug bomb once in the house to kill fleas in carpet.

The damage is not apparent immediately.
    1. 3 months later , my speakers souded funny and i discovered
the foam plastc outer ring supporting the paper cone was GONE. - dust
    2. Many vinyl albums were destroyed.
    3. nylon gear mechanisms in VCRs were damaged.

    4. And ever since , both of my eyes point in different directions.
and I can't remember PI to more than 30 digits.

Also, don't wipe you butt with sandpaper. Or pour sugar in the gas tank. Seriously, that was dumb.

Oh well, we all make dumb mistakes. (I don't post mine, and I most assuredly have a nice list running.)

I hate bug spray. My dog stays outside.

If you're ever gonna repeat the "toothepaist" trick on a CD or DVD .... never ever rub in cicles but from center to outer edge and back again (I'm serious!). With toothpaste you're making tiny scratches, there's no way to avoid that BUT ... when ever the laser meets a tiny horizontal scratch and has to jump over it, it will cuz it's just half a mm or less. When the laser meets a circulair scratch it has to deal with it for at least one rotation and is likely to loose track!

  7. Yes not so brite, but then not intended either.
Disk should have been in drive not on floor! Seems it was taken out and misplaced though.

Ya know those bug bombs could be a real problem I never thought of.
I set them off in the old storage trailer once in awhile, might not be a good idea after all!

  8. well I gotta say that I'm a real firm believer of the "toothpaste trick."

I had read about this numerous times over the last year..and figured it was just B.S. ...but too many people said it worked for them..which made me think otherwise. A while back I tried the toothpaste trick on a DVD that wouldn't rip at a certain point...when I was done the DVD was completely ruined...unplayable and terribley scratched. But I recently realized that the reason that occured was because I was using STEEL WOOL to rub the toothpaste in.....lmao...nah...just kiddin'...no...what I did do though was rub the toothpaste in CIRCLES. This is apparently a NO-NO in rubbing DVD's in the first place. That's why all the cleaning solutions..or most of them anyway..tell you to run in straight lines..but NOT in circles.

But unfortunately...or I should say "FORTUNATELY"...I didn't have a single, unreadable DVD since that time. The main reason for that has to be that the Lite-On 166s has a more refined, superior laser then the 163 series. I had the 163 series and loved it....but I'd say...once every 3 weeks i'd come across a disk that was unreadable....since I've had the LITE-ON 166s...I've come across ONLY TWO TOTAL! That's pretty damn amazing.....anyway....getting to the point....today I figured my one project for the day would be "SNATCH".....a disk with both aspect ratios...I'm keeping the WideScreen version...so I go to rip it and DVD DECRYPTER gets stuck at around 50% or so. I try smart ripper..same thing....I resort to using DVD DECRYPTER with read errors disabled..and fast skip errors ticked as well...and still....it gets stuck.

I try putting the disk in my SONY burner with DSS enabled in SILENT...NORMAL,...AND OVERDRIVE MODE...and STILL..THE SAME THING! I start to get pissed..but of course that doesn't do much good....so I say..what the hell...let's try the toothpaste deal again...but this time...rubbing SOFTLY..SLOWLY and in straight lines. So that is exactly what I do...put toothpaste on anywhere I saw heavy scratching...which was really about 50% of the disk....and I slowly buff all the toothpaste in the disk.

Then I take a rag with luke warm water...and slowly remove the excess toothpaste. I dried the disk off and it actually appeared "BUFFED"..like when you wax your car and you can see from an angle with those light scratches....the same was true with the disk. The toothpaste WILL MAKE light scratches...but that's ok...because after I was done..I threw the disk back into my LITE-ON...ripped the bad VOB....and guess what? WRONG...it STILL DIDN'T RIP! LOL......

HOWEVER....when I for the "MILLIONTH" time put the disk BACK in my writer and used DVD DECRYPTER..GUESS WHAT? ...WRONG AGAIN!! IT STILL DIDN'T RIP! .....but SERIOUSLY......I figured...screw this.....i've tried damn near every combination..and still nothing....but I didn't try SMART RIPPER IN CONJUNCTION WITH MY SONY ..IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE "POST TOOTHPASTE WAXING"....in that order I hadn't tried..so one last time I said WHAT THE HELL...fired up SMART RIPPER.....selected the bad VOB.....and GUESS WHAT? BAMMMMMMMMM!!!! That's right....this time it worked like a charm! Over the bad spots smartripper did slow down to like 0.1x...but it didn't COMPLTELY/PERMANENTLY STOP like DVD DECRYPTER DID!

As I said...even DVD DECRYPTER COULD NOT AND WOULD NOT rip this disk..but with the combination mentioned...SMART RIPPER handled it up. SmartRipper is still good for some things..no doubt about it. So if anyone comes across a bad disk...don't be quick to give up.....I spent about 90 minutes total with all methods..but as you can see...it paid off in the end.

    :P
