As much as I have tried to go through the posts, also the guides, I just cannot connect to all the technical terms used to just simply back up my DVD movie to another DVD. It is just mostly me getting confused with what to do next. Sorry, but I am asking just what steps I need to take to get this done. I have the following programs under "EasyDivx" software:
DVD Decrypter
Smart Ripper
FlaskMPEG
At this time I have my movie, "Potter" on my hard drive using DVD Encryptor.
It is in one folder called "Potter"
There is a sub folder in it called VIDEO_TS. In this folder there is a text file, (stream information) also nine VT_S files from 01 to 08. (Do these need to be compressed?)
Maybe I can just take this a step at a time and have someone help walk me through this, please? As I accomplish one task can I report back here for the next step?
Thanks a lot-

If you truely want to go to DVDr with DVD-Video, an easy next step would be to use DVDShrink. Actually, this could be the 1st and only step, but it may work from where you are at.
Here is a basic guide to the latest version (3.0). To get this free program, click on this DVDShrink link. Also, that link will list other guides.
But first answer this question:
In your VIDEO_TS folder do you have the following files VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_01.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO, and VTS_01_0.BUP?
If yes, continue with DVDShrink. If no, you need them.
How to get them? Best way is to copy them from the original to your VIDEO_TS folder. They are not encrypted so you can just use file manager. If you can't do this, you can re-create them using IFOEdit. This is not the perfect solution because the menus would be gone, and the subtitles would be green. PS: Your menus are probably already gone. It was in the VTS_01_0.VOB file.I mean it in the nicest way. -
Thanks for the reply!
I want to clarify something. For some reason I seem to insist on copying to DVD, mainly for the reason of the 4.7 GB space hoping to eliminate copying to multiple CD's. Is there something here that I am missing?
To answer re: the VOB files. I only have the one TS (stream infomation) file also only the VOB files from 01 to 08 as follows...
VTS_01_1VOB, VTS_01_2VOB, etc., (no IFO or BUP) so, looks like I need to start over.
I have downloaded DVD Shrink 3, also the guide.
I appreciate your help but what I am going to do now is try to see how far I can go with your recommendations. I will get back here to post my results.
Thank you again-

if you decide to use dvdshrink as your DVD backing software of choice, I would also recommend downloading dvdshrinkiso. Using this application with dvdshrink completely automates the dvd to dvdr process with FREEWARE tools.
I would really recommend dvdshrink as your dvd-dvdr solution. Its a very simple to use interface.
If you use dvdshrink iso with dvdshrink, here are the basic steps:
open and configure (first time only) the dvd drive and dvdr drive locations and the location of dvdshrink on your HD. Press (i believe) "start" and dvdshrink will pop open. Click the dvd button and OK. DVDshrink will do a quick (2 minute) scan of your dvd.
for full disk backup, click backup and then do deep analysis (takes longer but worth it) and then click OK. when you come back in a few hours, your burned DVD will be ready to play. For cheaper media, go into the settings/properties of dvdshrink and change the disk size to 4 gig or something you feel comfortable with. This may prevent freezing of cheaper made media at the outer edge where they dye is thinner.
For movie only, click reauthor and then drag the main movie from the first window to the newly created window. Remove sound tracks and subtitles that you dont want and then click back up, then check reatuhor and OK. -
Think of those VOB files as pieces of a multi-file ZIP/RAR. It will be less confusing that way. The biggest group will be the main movie, and the next biggest group will be the extras. The lead-in/spam/ads are usually in the first VOB.
To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
OK, as I mentioned, I get confused. I did not run the ISO program first. I inserted the movie in the DVD drive and ran DVD Shrink. Amazingly, it was in complete tune with the guide, however I do not know at what point I delete the languages that I do not want. No big deal as I received a complete green bar. In DVD Shrink, it did not give me the option. I have not yet ran the analysis and the movie is still in the DVD drive.
At what point do I remove the DVD movie from the DVD drive and insert a blank DVD?
Are these the steps?
Run ISO
Run DVD Shrink
Here I am lost.
Thank you for your patience-

I want to thank you for all the valuable info you gave me to accomplish this. With the two programs you recommended, it was a snap, especially for me being a first time user.
Here is where I am at now.
I successfully had the files copied to my HD. Not being totally sure, I used a program the computer came with, Veritas Software, Record Now, which gave me three options...
Make an exact copy-
Make a music CD-
Make a Data CD-
Not being sure, I chose the Data option and managed to create the DVD OK. Oddly though, the movie will play on my computer, (Windows Media), but will not play on my DVD player, (Sony SLV-300P) which supports, in part, CD-R/RW & MP3 Playback and DVD-RW/-R, DVD RW/-R Playback. The message is 'cannot play this CD'-
Any clues?
Thanks-

it is not formatted correctly more than likely (unless it is and your dvd player cannot play dvdr's (+/-).
If you used dvdshrinkiso, it should have burned the move perfectly to your dvdr. What burning programs do you have other than the one that came with your computer. Do you have nero? If so, which kind (normal or express) and which version? -

See this guide.
Settop players access the data differently than the pc. They require that the files be in an exact order, end to end. As per the DVD spec.
Hopefully this helps. I'm not sure if there are differences in your SW and what is used by the guide. There is also a guide about record now in the guides section of this site. Not as detailed and for an older version.
I mean it in the nicest way. -
Thanks to all who donated their suggestions! I now have a complete back up copy of my movie on a DVD, with excellent quality too, I might add. To sum it all up-
I used DVD Shrink, IFO Edit and Nero Express. The latter, a downloaded trial version which I am going to definitely purchase. I thinkI may not have been able to play the DVD on my stand alone player because I did not finalize the disk. The Nero Express seemed to automatically select that feature. Also, it has the option to create a DVD Videowhich I did not have in my Veritas Software. (This version may have just been a basic version as I saw that there was a better version in one of the posts.)
I may have lucked out by accident as I did not do too much altering of the default settings in Nero Express. I know I will have questions later on about the IFO Edit program.
For me, looks like I have a nifty combination for my purpose.
Thanks again to all-
Norma
