  1. I have a 55Gb avi file. What program can turn this into a 700-800Mb
    file?

    Virtualdub.

open the file, go to Video->Full Processing Mode, then go to Video->Compression and select a more compressed codec, such as Divx.

  3. Thanks for the help. Can you suggest one codec over another? I would like to end up with a mpeg2 svcd that I can burn onto a cd-r and watch in my home dvd player. I usually use dvd2svcd to create bin and cue and burn with vcdeasy.

  4. I followed your advice. Used VD and compresses using Divx5. Ended up with a 1.1Gb file. Can I compress this even more to get around 700Mb file? If so, how?

there should be codec configuration or quality settings - lower the bitrate or the quality.

if you want this on an SVCD, you need to convert to Mpeg, so you should use an application like TMPGenc to encode it (from your original avi file, not the divx re-encode).

  6. I believe DVD2SVCD can take an avi as input.

Because this guide tells me so ....
